As the Cantina Turns - Thanksmibble Part 4 (Are we there yet?)
The cantinas came to a stop outside a door, a patina of love hearts and lace covered the top third. It looked like someone had sneezed in a particularly offensive and brutal fashion. on it. A brass nameplate proclaimed Romance in a Gothic font.
“Always with the Gothic font. What is it with these people?” asked 10s,
“Everyone ready?” she asked looking around. In unison the other three held up their towels.
She pushed the door, but it wouldn't open.
“What's going on?” she asked and pushed the door again.
“Here, let me try,” said Debio, the door opened and the smell of perfume wafted into the corridor,
“Obviously I have the knack,” he said, smiling and went to step inside. The door closed in his face and he yelped as he stubbed his toe.
“Ow! What? I don't get it, I mean, how simple can it be opening a door? Someone else give it a try.”
Sian walked over and pushed on the door, but once again it wouldn't move.
“Anyone got any ideas,” said 10s, looking around. Max had his head tilted to one side, after thinking for a couple of seconds his eyes lit up and he said,
“I think I know the answer.”
“So let's have it, said 10s, pushing the door once more in a futile gesture. Max put down the torches and then prodded at the door. It swung open with ease, the smell of perfume grew.
“Right. And...” said Debio. Max turned to Sian and held out his arm,
“After you dear lady,” he said in a chivalric tone, waving her through. Sian looked puzzled and said
“Why me?”
“Because it's romance, that's the way the door works,” replied Max.
“Oh I see,” said Sian, walking inside, Max followed and the door swung shut.
“That's a bit sexist isn't it?” said 10s.
“If you want to debate political correctness with a door, maybe now isn't the time,” said Debio holding the door open for her. 10s sighed and walked through into a room that was lit by a gazillion candles.
“Nice touch,” said Debio, “Very romantic.”
“I'm glad you think so,” A high-pitched woman's voice cut across the room. She came into a view followed by a man, they were both around four feet ten high and dressed almost identically in old fashioned clothes with lots of lace on the cuffs and neckline. While the man just appeared a little silly, it gave the woman a rather sinister look.
“All she needs is the evil laugh,” whispered Max.
Then the candles went out.
In the darkness Sian muttered,
“You know I hope this doesn't start to develop into a theme. It could get rather annoying.”
Just then a torch flicked on and the cantinas were in time to see people surrounding them holding chloroform masks.
“Are you related to my dentist?” asked 10s, and then everything went dark again.
10s woke up on a polished wooden floor to see Max and Debio tied together on a love seat, doilies stuffed in their mouths. From above her came the sound of yelling.
'It's never a nice soft bed, a gorgeous man and the sound of birdsong, is it?' thought 10s. She looked up to see Sian standing over her, holding the umbrella Debio had taken from Ernest in the cabaret. It was battered and bent, but Sian was still brandishing it in the most threatening manner she could manage,
“You will not touch her,” Sian yelled,
“And you will not be able to defend her,” the sinister looking woman pointed to a bunch of Cupids flying around a bunch of love hearts hung from the ceiling. They were using them as target practise with little success.
“Shoot her, shoot her, attack!” She cried pointing a finger that ended with a thorn shaped nail at Sian. 10s came to her senses.
“No, Sian, Run! Run!” 10s pushed Sian away, “Leave me here, save yourself.”
“How noble,” the woman cried, clapping her hands together, “Self sacrifice is my favourite.”
“Not without you,” said Sian and grabbing 10s' wrist she began to drag her towards the door. An arrow whizzed past her face as she bent down. She brandished the umbrella again, adjusting her grip as she moved. Below her thumb Sian felt a bump on the handle, a button. She pressed it expecting the umbrella to open over her head. A small fountain of what appeared to be pepper shot into the air.
“What the?” Asked 10s, trying to get to her feet, she slipped on the floor as the Cupids flew nearer, more arrows began to fly past them
“I thought it was an automatic umbrella but I've no idea what that stuff was. Come on, let's go, they're almost on us.”
Another arrow flew past 10s and caught in Sian's hair. The nearest cupid was just feet from them. The woman cackled wildly and shouted encouragement as arrows rained around them. Sian's grip on 10s wrist slipped just as 10 gained her feet and they both fell to the floor. It was over, the mad woman had won. The Cupids surrounded them circling inches above their heads. Sian grasped the umbrella to her in a futile gesture of protection. Beside the button on the handle was a label reading 'Press to Flee'. 'Fat chance' thought Sian, closing her eyes, everything went black.
Then 10s was moving again,
“Come on! Come on! Sian. Let's go! Now!”
10s had grabbed her arm and was pulling her up. Sian opened her eyes to see the flight of Cupids just above her head. They were taking absolutely no notice of anyone. Flying around in crazy circles, their bows and arrows fell to the floor as they flew into one another, scratching furiously and howling in pain.
“What's happening?” Asked Sian, as they ran for the door. There were screams of rage from behind them, but the woman was unable to break through the howling mass of Cupids. 10s lunged for the door,
'I hope this works', she thought and put her entire weight behind her shoulder. The door flew open with the barest touch and both 10s and Sian were sent sprawling across the corridor and into the stone wall on the other side.
“So how come it opens out but not in?” Asked 10s, shaking her head to clear it.
“Must be because we were running away,” said Sian.
“So much for a happy ending,” said 10s, “we need to get away from here, and we need to find help to rescue Max and Debio.”
They stood up, staggering around trying to get their bearings in the weak efforts of the emergency lighting. They moved towards a noise coming from further up the corridor. Stopping outside 10s said
“I know this place. It's Office Party. We'll be safe in here.” 10s pointed to a sign saying 'Gatecrasher's Welcome'
In the spirit of the place, they did their best to crash through the door and found the party in full swing. A couple of party-goers immediately tried to proposition them, being in no mood for romance they ran for a side door labelled 'Holidays and Special Occasions'.
“I'd say that this qualifies wouldn't you?” asked 10s, Sian nodded and they rushed through, and slammed the door behind them. They stood leaning against the door, out of breath and exhausted. The party noise subsided to a level just below deafening.
“Hello you two, just out for a quiet night?”
10s and Sian spun around to see Bettie waving at them from a nearby card table. They made their way over to find her playing Bridge with Raven, Fen and Shoestring.
“What are you gais doing here?” Asked 10s, “I thought you went home for Thanksgiving.”
“Oh, we're just hiding from all that holiday stuff. It's all too commercial these days,” said Fen, laying the queen of hearts, both 10s and Sian winced.
“It's just nicer here,” said Raven, she looked carefully at 10s and then pointed to her arm, “Are you bleeding?”
“So, why are you here?” Asked Shoestring, laying another heart on Fen's queen, Sian began to wimper and sank down to the floor.
“Get Sian and let's go down to Tech Support and talk to Ande, I'll try to explain,” said 10s.
