As the Cantina Turns - Thanksmibble part 5: The End (?)
They settled Sian down on an empty bench and found themselves chairs. 10s began to explain their journey as Raven patched her up. Ten minutes later when 10s finished, everyone else was looking stunned.
“What do you want to do?” Asked Bettie
“We need reinforcements and we need to help Eye. They had already set off to attack the cantina by the time we got into Romance, they must have had at least thirty minutes head start on us, and even sailing against the current on the moat they must have made the cantina by now. We need to do something.”
There was a noise from the server rack behind them and a tall, thin man wearing a t-shirt saying 'Bite me' and holding a pen-light appeared.
“Ande?” he said
“Oo, he's cute. Who's this?” Asked Fen
“Hi Rex. Everyone this is Rex, he helps out here in Tech when he's not in Round Table. What is it Rex?”
“Rex. Nice name,” said Fen
“Er, thanks,” he said, clicking the pen-light on and off. He turned back to Ande, “Ande, I heard what you guys were saying and I think I can help.”
“How's that Rex?” Asked Ande,
“Do you remember the re-enactment people?”
“Sure, the ones you hate,” replied Ande.
“True, but for some weird reason they listen to me ” said Rex.
“Why would you want to help us,” asked 10s.
“I work in Tech Support,” he shrugged his shoulders,
“I don't know, I mean we help anyone who needs us right? Anyway, I've never liked romance, it's all so complicated, all those stupid rules. And just look what they've done to you.”
Rex pointed to a semi-concious Sian and the bandages that ran across 10s body,
“If that's romance,” he said, “I'm not sure I want to be part of it.”
“What influence makes you so wonderful then?” Asked Bettie.
“It's my name,” replied Rex.
“What? Rex? That's not particularly awe inspiring,” said Shoe.
“That's my surname. My given name is Arthur. Go on, let's hear it,” he cringed.
“Arthur Rex?” said Shoe, puzzled, “I don't get it.”
“Please don't make me explain,” Rex gave Ande a pleading look.
10s took charge as Ande began to explain to Shoe about Rex, Shoe continued to look confused.
“If you go down to the re-enactment folk, and get some reinforcements, and we'll make our way back to the cantina and try to find out what's happening.”
“Shame I don't have transport,” said Rex, “It's three floors down.”
“I have the War Horse stabled across the corridor in Nature if you want to share a ride? We can be there in five minutes then,” said Fen.
Rex agreed, and he and Fen left to saddle up. The rest of the cantinas got organised and began to make their way back.
As they approached the doors the cantinas strained to hear the noise of the battle. Instead all they could hear was a steady drip-drip from the outside drainpipe. 10s opened the door and peered in,
“At least our doors are sensible,” she muttered as the other cantinas crowded in behind her. The place was deserted.
Shoe spoke in a very small voice, “We're too late, the cantina's been breached. We've been over-run”
“Wait a minute,” said 10s, “Why is there a wall of bodies blockading the far end of the cantina?”
“Yeah, and why are they all dressed in pirate costumes?” Asked Sian, who was leaning against a wall for support.
“And why is it wet everywhere?” Asked Raven.
“It is clean for once though, and it smells nice and fresh too.” said Ande.
Just then, Eye led his group of cantinas through the main door. They were laughing and joking and drenched from head to foot.
“That was so cool,” said Angel
“Oh Eye, you can do such fancy things with that book,” said Psycho. Eye blushed and then turned to the others.
“Would you care to explain?” Asked Bettie, raising her eyebrows, fluttering her fairy-wings and looking suspiciously from one returning cantina to the next.
“What?” Said Eye, “Oh, the book and the pirates and the water. Well, you remember that 10s put the freezer on super-deluxe-insta-defrost the last time we had Ed and Huge out?”
“Yes,” the others nodded.
“Obviously, when the power went out, the freezer defrosted immediately.”
“So?” said Shoe.
Angel cut in,
“So, the pirates from romance attacked just as the freezer defrosted and got washed away in the tidal wave.”
“How did you all escape?” Asked Ande, the other cantinas looked puzzled.
“Sun-Tzu – The Art of War”, said Eye, “It's such a big book we just all got on and used it like a surfboard.”
“You should have seen us,” said Ali, “Synchronised surfing. We are a team.” They high-fived.
There was a blare of trumpets and the cantina doors burst open once more. Fen rode in on her war horse which she had covered in the cantina colours. Behind her Rex from Tech Help was leading a large bunch of people dressed in medieval armour and carrying swords.
“Who are these people?” Asked Ali, “Hey some of you look familiar.”
“These folk are Rex's friends. They're from Round Table,” said Fen.
“Sorry, you're too late. It's all over,” said Eye.
A small kid at the front of the crowd, and dressed in full battle armour, stamped his foot in frustration,
“Oh, that's so not fair. I never get to go questing. You're too small, you're too young. That's what they always say,”
He pointed his sword at the people around him,
“Now I finally get to do something, and it's all over. It's despicable, how am I supposed to be cool and act all brave if there's never any fighting?”
He folded his arms over his chest, clanging his sword against his helmet and dropping both in the process. Everyone sniggered and the kid blushed bright red.
“It's not over though,” said Eye, “The contents of the E-Z-Freeze are still missing.”
“Yeah, and they still have Debio and Max down in Romance. Who knows what hideous things they are doing to them by now,” said Sian, grimacing.
“A quest, a quest. Please let's go on a quest,” The kid from the Round Table pleaded with Rex.
“Why is he always asking Rex,” asked Shoe, “Can't he make his own decisions?”
“I follow my liege wherever he may lead me,” replied the kid.
“That could get a little awkward,” said Shoe,” But I still don't see why you'd ask him.”
“No,” said Sian, “You can't go back. It's terrifying down there. They'll torture you and tie you up.”
Several people said,
“Actually, that sounds like fun,” and
“Let's go now then.”
Sian rounded on them,
“Listen. This is war. That isn't Romance down there. It's some sick perverted joke. They've twisted it way beyond what you'd call romance. It's not all hearts and flowers. People are in pain and you need a better plan and a better attitude. That's why Debio and Max aren't here, because we didn't take romance seriously, and that's the only way you'll beat them.”
Eye opened the damp copy of the Art of War and quoted,
“If the enemy has occupied them before you, do not follow him, but retreat and try to entice him away.”
“What?” Said Angel.
“When the time comes, we will need a distraction,” said Eye looking up at Rex.
“I believe we can help you there,” he said wheeling around and shouting orders. The Round Tablers left and the cantinas began to tidy up,
“Hmm, a better plan,” said Eye leafing slowly through the book.
“Better make some tea,” said Ali, flicking the switch on the kettle.
The lights went out.
In the dark 10s said, “You know, this is beginning to get really irritating.”
