As a native Texan, I want to apologize for poor ol' Cousin Fred. We ain't like him, and don't invite him to the tailgate parties, though he shows up regardless with a plate. There's a rumor it's the one in his head, but I never believed that. Not much. (SNIPPED)

Another Texan brought this to my attention:

Fred Head" lists as some of his supporters former Governor Dolph Briscoe, who died in 1991, and Jim Wright, former Speaker of the House, who resigned in an ethics inquiry started by Newt Gingrich.

Leaving aside the ethics of the ethics inquiry, how is a man dead for fifteen years able to support anyone? I've heard the myths (?) of voting the cemetary, but I've never seen the cemetary called out to campaign before.

This is Texas, y'all! It is customary for the dead to participate in politics.

Here's one of my favorite endorsements:

U.S. Congressman Eddie Bernice Johnson, Dallas Mexican American Democrats

Ms. Johnson is African-American.

Hey, let's all write to his site and let him know Ol' Dolph is daid.

[email protected]

Or perhaps express a correctly spelled opinion about his clear contempt for romance writers and voters.

(Don't point out his bad spelling as that ain't po-light. )

It wouldn't hurt to write to various Austin newspapers/TV stations as well with an opinion on this.

Good idea! My siser lives in Pflugerville just outside Austin. I wrote Dingus
with this:
"
A twenty year old Harlequin Romance is porn???????????????

That's way less than intelligent.

I'm sending an e-mail to my sister in Pflugerville to her know an idiot is running for office there.

Regards (well, not a lot of regards),

Scott Saylors"

I also wrote my sister, she wouldn't have voted for the yo-yo anyway. She's a big fan of historical romance and no prude.

Regards (for real),

Scott

:Wha: I wonder if this guy doesn't know that RWA is headquartered in Texas, for heaven's sake! He just woke up a very big and annoyed sleeping dog with this one! Both RT and RWA conferences are IN Texas next year, and this is already flying around the internet.
Our chapter president posted on our list that Texas RWA chapters have launched a letter-writing campaign to the Houston Chronicle, as well as writing directly to Fred Head. :D

And I got this from Susan Combs:
Dear Marlys - many thanks for passing on your words. I really appreciate the help.

Susan

I've reported to his webserver that her novel excerpts up on his site without her permission IS copyright infringement.

Anyone else want to report it as well so someone has to do something about it?

LOL--One of my democrat buds--who writes hot romances--just mailed him a piece of her mind and told him to "GET OFF MY SIDE."

I did that too. I also wrote Mr. Head and told him he was in violation of copyright, that such a violation is a felony, and that as many as several dozen people would report him.

Then I suggested the best thing he could do was go to the website and pull down the copyrighted material.

Perhaps someone should tell Jaws?

Scott

As stated elsewhere, this is an erection election year!

My mail to the webserver bounced back. I may phone them, they're just over in Plano.

Many years ago, I had the honor of meeting Susan Combs after she became the Agriculture Commissioner for the state, at a convention, however I didn't know she had written a book. Interesting, thanks for letting me know.

I thought sne was one super nice lady, classy, but not as classy as our former governor Ann Richards. I'm going to miss her straight forward mouth. I mean she could say anything and get away with it because 1. it was the truth 2. she said it with such panache, it didn't matter who it offended. 3) she did it with class.

And don't get me started on Rick Perry...

Oh, excellent. :) I've been sitting on my hands on this one, as given what I write it would be more hinderance than help for me to say anything. But I'm going to get out the popcorn and watch as Fred Head discovers how many Texan women read romance. :)

The more of my friends I tell about this, the more they get mad. It's great. Fred Head sure doesn't know what he's gotten himself into.

Not to mention a good portion of my romances take place in Texas.

Does anyone know if Harlequin plans to re-release the book? I mean, all this free press, I know I would jump all over it. Susan Combs probably wouldn't mind the extra pocket money in the least. After all this hype, I want a copy just to say I have it. I'd probably send it to Susan Combs and ask her to sign it.

And for that matter... does Harlequin even know about all this? Instead of emailing dear ol' Fred maybe someone should let Harlequin know he's infringing on their copyrights. :)

It's not a Harlequin book; it's a Kismet, which is now defunct, and the rights have reverted. However, chances are even if it were a Harlequin, the rights would have reverted to the author by now. Well, maybe. My first one from them had a _second_ Japanese edition 14 years after the first Japanese edition....

Oops, my bad. The cover reminded me of a Harlequin book. :) Well Susan Combs needs to unearth that book and get someone to publish it again. It would be sold out in no time. :)

One more point:

Fred calls Ms Combs a pornographer.

However, her book is long out of print and hard to find. She does not have it up on a website for just ANYONE to see.

But Fred does. He plucked out the juicy bits and posted them where anyone--including KIDS--can have a good hot read of it.

Now WHO'S the pornographer here????

I am so voting for someone else.

I brought that up to my friends. He probably got it off his wife's bookshelf. Hehehe. Or *gasp* his own secret stash.

Don't provoke him to take it off his site. Only by reading it can anybody judge whether it really is pornograpic or not. Those who don't read it have no reason to question what he says.

If he thinks that's porn, then I feel sorry for his wife--if he found anyone who'd put up with him.

He sees it as porn--but just to get a vote, mind you. It's a cheap, stupid ploy, and to judge by the reaction here, it blew up in his face. He's just informed everyone of his boundless contempt for the intelligence of voters if he thinks it's going to help him.

The other point is if he says it's porn then he should have a notice about "over 18's only on this page." Bona fide porn sites have those up--for all the good they do!
icon10.gif
But he doesn't have that little warning flag at all.

Imagine how well that might go over with the conservative parents of a kid doing a civics paper! The kid stumbles over it and...heh-heh-heh!

As for his rant against Ms Combs--it's my experience that when a person resorts to name-calling instead of a proper discussion of the issues then he doesn't have the brains for the job.

That ISP address for Fred Head may not work because that ISP was taken over by another company. They're no longer based in Plano, but Victoria, B.C., although their web site mentions east Texas

Mr. Head's web site is registered via DomainsyByProxy, a division of GoDaddy. So much for transparency in government.
