The Saga of the Swingset!

Ugh... I'm ready to essplode, so I need to rant

For as long as she could talk, my daughter's been begging us for a "playground" - one of those big, wood swingset things. Well, since we lived in a townhouse, and the rules were pretty strict about building big hulking swingsets (for some reason, they didn't want anyone doing that...), a playground was right out.

When we looked at the house we eventually bought, it had one of those big playgrounds. Unfortunately, the woman selling the house was taking it with her when she and her daughter moved. It was ours for about four days before the guys came to take it apart and move it out. My daughter was sad.

Since then, she's been asking and asking, but what she didn't know what that her dad and I had already budgeted for, and decided to get, a playground. Back in April, we went out, picked out the one we wanted, and ordered it. It was due May 5.

April 30th, we get a call. Due to a "labor shortage" our swingset delivery was being pushed back to May 13 and was that a problem. Well, I guess not, though I wasn't really happy about it. Okay. May 13th it is.

Well, May 12th we get another phone call. Due to a "labor shortage", our delivery wouldn't be until May 23. Was that a problem?

Um. Yeah. Not only was it supposed to be here on the 5th, but it's getting more and more difficult to keep from slipping - since we wanted to surprise the Girl.

And the saga began.

Jersey Guy calls Swingset Company's customer service (ha!) department to find out WTF is going on. First excuse is this "labor shortage", then it's the weather, then it's because the contractor won't be in this area... well, long story short, Jersey Guy is fighting with customer service (ha!) because it's starting to look like Swingset Company is in trouble with their supplier and we aren't getting this damn thing.

Fed up with customer service (ha!) - he calls the middleman company where we actually went to pick out said swingset. The guy there can't believe this nonsense is going on, and let him make a few phone calls. Long story short, he offers us a choice of three days - 20th, 21st, or 23rd. We pick (surprise, surprise) the 20th.

IT'S STILL NOT HERE!!!!

Jersey Guy (who is steaming, btw) calls middleman guy. He's not in, but his partner is and give him ten minutes to call first guy and find out why this furious guy is yelling at him. Second guy calls back with info that first guy said we agreed on the 23rd!

Why would we agree to that when that's the exact date that set this whole thing into motion to begin with???

By now, Jersey Guy's head's ready to blow off. So still no %$!#%&^* swingset. It won't be here until the 23rd. HA! So much for surprising my daughter, since she doesn't have school on Friday. Grrrr...

Whew - sorry about the long rant, but I sure do feel better now...

(until the 23rd, when I'll probably have a stroke if that thing doesn't arrive)

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I'd cancel the order and go buy my playset from some other, more reliable company.

Is there any way you could just have them deliver it, and then have a few friends and neighbors come over to build it? that's what we did when the Twinkies got a playset -- a case of beer, a bunch of burgers, and it was like a good ol' fashioned barn raising. The thing was up and operational in about two hours.

Edit: I just realized the problem wasn't getting someone to come build it for you, but the delivery itself. Never mind.

Yeah - I wondered about the labor shortage as well...

We thought about cancelling, but a) we really like this set, and b) at the rate we're going, it would be the end of the summer before we had it.

The good thing is, the swingset middlemen are knocking a couple hundred $$ off the price - but if it isn't here on Friday.... well... that mushroom cloud that wipes out half of NJ? Ground zero will be my backyard.

Go some place else Jersey Chick. Too many times in this world we all just roll over and take bad service, what we should be doing is voting with our wallets. Company's that do not respect the customer have the focus all wrong and deserve to go out of business.

Sorry to hear the troubles, but the company does sound like a bunch of amateurs. Hope the situation gets better and your daughter gets her playground.

Sounds like it's time to pray to the swingset gods and have them rain tiny little swingsets down upon you.

A thousand tiny swingsets are better than one big one anyways.

I don't want to name the company, but I have a feeling that any other swingset place is probably a middleman for them as well. It's a HUGE company. And colorful.

Is it one of those big wooden swingsets? My parents bought one of them for the grandkids and my brother and I put the thing together (it took 3 frikin days) and then like a month into winter, a windstorm blew it over. Oh man was I pissed.

Why not build your own? Just use a bunch of 4x4 and 4x6 wooden beams. Use bolts to connect everything together, and make your own set.

That's why my old man did when I was like 7 years old, and I even helped him put it together.

Buh-lieve me, I wouldn't even attempt to build something like this. I took woodshop in high school, and nothing I made turned out looking even close to what it was supposed to actually be.

IF we ever get this freakin' thing, I'll post pictures. It's one of those gi-freakin-normous wood things that only needs electricity in order to live in it.

Well if you still want it to be a surprised for your daughter, could you take her out for something special on Friday and leave daddy home to deal with the installation? Or maybe arrange for her to spend the day at a friend's?

I hope you get the swingset! My dad built me a huge tall swing when I was a kid, which was later replaced by a ginormous rope swing from our oak tree. BEST THING EVER.

Ooh! I like Jo's idea. Take her out for a movie or something while the other half stays home.

The surprise is about 3/4 of the fun!

Lowe's and Home Depot have swingset kits you can have delivered the same day in many areas and are in stock for you to pick out. I know you like this one, but I know how it is to spend 5 million years trying to hide that surprise that never gets delivered.

Even if you end up putting it together with her there, she will be thrilled anyway. Maybe she can even help and to her, helping put her set together will make it all that much more special.

How frustrating.

We got ours at Home Depot. I'm not a big fan of HD, but we basically got a kit with the swings, chains, slide, climbing net, hardware, etc. then bought HD's lumber per the kit recommendations.

Oh, and a cordless drill. Gotta have an extra one for a job that big.

It's a great playset, but they're a lot of work to assemble. Good luck.

With our stimulas refund,*caugh* we planned on buying one of those swingsets too. Thanks for the warning! We will surely be careful as to what we are getting ourselves into now. I can't believe that company has given you such the run-around. That is so unprofessional of them-I would be super pissed off too. If you have already paid, probably online by credit card, then I don't think that there is a way to get your money back so easily- I say this bc you've already had c.service on the phone umpteen times. I wish you and your child the best of luck and I'm sorry that this happen to you, but glad that you let us know about it.

We just sold one of those monstrosities, and I think you are right about the level of wood shop training you had not being adequate for one of those.
They sure are purty though!

I am so skeered today. I keep expecting The Big One to hit.

I'll keep a weather eye to the northeast today... our essplosions usually come from the southwest, but today, I better watch the other direction!

Hope it all turns out good - and I wanna see pictures!

The saga continues and the fuse is getting dangerously close -

We got a call at 7:30 this morning - the contractor went to pick up the set, and it's damaged. (yeah - why do I not believe that? why do I not believe it even exists right now??)

So, my husband gets on the phone with the place where we bought it. Yep - that's right - no swing set today. Probably not until the 1st week of June. Uh-huh. The only positive is now we're down to paying 1/2 price for it.

i'm so disgusted right now - i just want to either throw something or sit down and cry.
