How big is your footprint?

Take this (pretty quick) test to see how big your global footprint is upon the environment.

It made me lose a certain amount of my self satisfied tree hugging glow!

Apparently I need 2.7 planets. Excellent.

Actually, this quiz is flawed because it says my footprint is below average for my country (at 4.9 global hectares) but I dispute that. The questions are far too generalised and it doesn't mention anything about the amount of electricity and meat I use, or whether I prefer cows to chickens, or whether I dump all my carbon monoxide in the city or the countryside, or how many CFCs I use, or whether I recycle, or whether I keep my dog on his lead, or how often I run over pedestrians etc etc etc. So their preachy 'If-everyone-lived-like-you' stance is both irritating and inaccurate.

It tells me to do the following:

- Get less protein and more anaemia

- Buy a Japanese car

- Buy unpackaged food and eat it twice

- Leave things to rot in the garden

- Plant plants that don't need water

- Give all my magazines away

- Not get any junk mail

and, most importantly...

- Buy crap from their affiliate site

Uh-huh. Yeah.

We'd need 1.9 planets if everyone lived like me. Whatever that means.

4.2 planets. And proud. (I happen to drive a lot and live in the city)

Seriously, eat less protein? Bike or walk to work? Leave things to rot in my garden? I may love my planet, but not that much.

Besides, not to be a cynic (I do care about the environment -- just not a fanatic), but mother Earth is going to be fine LONG after humans all die out...

Lack of iron causes anaemia, not protein.
The high protein diets of the west are the leading casue of osteoporosis, as it acts like acid rain on the bones, along with causing kidney problems.

So, even though western women (particularly American) consume more calcium than the rest of the world, they counteract it with excess protein, and have higer osteoporosis rates than anywhere else in the world.

I agree the quiz misses out some vital questions, but the fact is, all opinions on the matter aside, meat production is the second largest cause of enviromental damage.

I wonder how an Amish person would do in this test?

(But first, they'll have to use a computer -- so already one strike against them...)

I'm 2.2, and so need 1.2 planets.

This is largely down to the face we can't afford a bigger house, another car, etc.

I have a semi-self sufficient friend who did damn well, so I reckon Amish people would ace it.
Hey! Let's all be Amish....I'm not sure about the clothes, but having Harrison Ford come to stay can't be bad.

My footprint was 20 acres.

On the other hand, I can't help but suspect that if more of the world lived a more affluent lifestyle, we'd find ways to accomplish more with fewer acres.

One other note of interest - organic farming may use less synthetic chemicals, but its lower yeild rates also mean that it uses a larger amount of land. Sometimes you just can't win, it seems.

Dang! I'm only a 40 with 8.9 planets. I was SURE I could beat you, James.

Just think, if everyone lived like me: 1) We'd be on 9 planets by now instead of crammed in on one. 2) Hunger and poverty would be eliminated. 3) Everyone would be healthy.

A very good thing all round, in my opinion.
