Synopsize Me, Baby (NaNo 2010)

NaNo is approaching. Do you have your plot ready? Were you looking for somewhere, anywhere to share it? This is the place.

Lewis Mulligan and the Pandemonium Engine

Lewis Mulligan is a scrapper in a textile mill in England when an aging aeronaut hires him on as cabin boy and apprentice navigator. They're transporting a bizarre clockwork device known as the "Pandemonium Engine" which draws the attention of a mysterious group of aristocrats known as the League of Solomon, as well as the ire of some church inquisitors known as the Malleus Maleficarum.

All this month I'll be posting crew profiles on my blog.

Two possible options right now. But one I'm thinking about;

A futuristic dystopia has two stunningly divided cultures due to complete freedom of money. One rich man has nothing he can do about it but is sick of watching it from afar.

As usual, I'm between 583 plots and with none of them I have any more than the context. I usually just start writing and see where this takes me.

Which then leads to me failing.

I seriously should start plotting.

Time: 1930s-ish. Place: Mountains of Wyoming. Main character: A woman hotelier and her experiences with locals and guests. Genre: either a love story or a mystery (or both). I can only snatch a few minutes a day to think about it, so I may have to take all until November 1 to figure it out! But at least the story's starting to gel.

This is close to what I have posted at the NaNoWriMo site:

An American woman, Neely, is arrested and extradited to England twenty five years after her involvement with a terrorist group and their British kidnapping victim. In a series of interviews, conducted as her murder trial unfolds, her interviewer learns that the victims and criminals aren't nearly as black and white as the press would have the public believe. And Neely is guarding more secrets than just those of a criminal nature.

Sounds interesting!

Myself, I'm going to be writing what is essentially a romance but after being married for a while, the woman develops breast cancer and has to deal with her disease. So, I guess it's really mainstream fiction with strong romantic elements.

I have two I'm deciding between. One is a sequel to the novel I'm revising, Hero/Villain. I love that book and the characters, so I'd be very happy writing a sequel. I'm not going to synopsize this one because that'd be spoilery if one of my betas happened upon this thread

The other is what I'm calling the cyborg spy boy-crush MG. So here's the mock query for it:

Quote:
When the new kid, Dean, saves Caleb from some bullies, Caleb starts to dream that Dean's come to save him from everything, like his abusive dad. He can't help it. Dean's so strong and cool. Why can't Caleb be like that?

He soon finds out that the reason he can't be like that is that Dean's a cyborg. Well, according to him, "cybernatically enhanced" but same thing. Dean's on a mission--so cool--to find a kid at Caleb's school who was injected with nanobots when he was a baby. This kid should be super-strong, so that leaves Caleb out, but he still wants to help. He wants to be around Dean.

The more time he spends with Dean, the more he realizes he's... crushing on Dean. Darn it, like he didn't have enough problems with bullies calling him "gay" without it being true?

But that's not the real problem. The real problem is that Dean might not have the same feelings. And that Caleb's crush might not stand the test when he finds out Dean's supposed to kill the Nano Kid.

A love story during a religious war pretty much sums mine up. Oh, and armageddon.

I've gotten as far as: A ghost story. Pathetic, huh? I'm hoping to start playing with an outline later this week, so I'm sure something more elaborate will present itself. I hope. Maybe.

It's not actually meant to be funny, but if I can make a writer laugh, then I must be doing *something* right...

I kinda figured it wasn't really meant to be funny but just the way you referred to such a monumental event as Armageddon as an afterthought was what tickled me.

Gosh, I can hardly wait for Nano!!!

Nice.

I'm resolutely determined to write the story I came up with a month ago...

But I have since changed the sub-plot to be a romance told from 3rd person. *Sigh*

What happened to my religious war 1st person text?!?

*grumps*

The opening scene goes something like this:

A girl comes up to a guy and asks him his name. When he tells her, she looks momentarily puzzled and then explains that she's dating somebody who looks just like him. It's a long distance relationship, via the internet, but they've exchanged emails and photographs and such.

She pulls out her cellphone and shows him a photo. "Doesn't he look just like you?" she asks.

"That is me," he replies.

. . . and it kinda goes from there.
