Hi Snowybunny,

How about a little context for the discussion? What made you decide to post a thread about the show and movie? Are you a fan? Did you watch the show when it aired - or discover it after it was canceled?

Psst, Sage, thank you.

Sorry, I didn't see those threads. Anyhow I watched the show after it was cancelled on a friend's request. By starting this thread I wanted to know what people's opinions are on it and also as a way to hear people's philosophical and phycological examinations of the characters and the show.

Do you have any opinions? It's not all about us, you know. Unless you're working on a paper or article. If so, you should be upfront about it.

Yep I do- in my opinion they should have added more to Inara's character. Of course they probably would gave developed her more if the show had been allowed to continue, but they started her out as a rather stereotypical weak feminine character.

Mal ranted excitedly, "If anybody ever tries to kill you, you try to kill them right back!"

Mal commented ominously, "If I ever come to kill you, you'll be facing me and you'll be armed."

Firefly is one of two series that we've purchased. We like them that much. The other one is, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Both are from Joss Whedon, so if Joss is out there, if you get to Ky, I'd buy you a beer.

Inara? Weak? What makes you think that?

Funny timing... I'm listening to my roommate watch the second episode right now.

I didn't watch Firefly when it first aired. Once it hit DVD, I was leaned on to marathon it over a weekend, and I found it infectiously good. It's immensely quotable, but I think that the biggest reason its garnered a very loyal fanbase is due to the cast and their obvious love for what they made. (If you ever watch Castle, take a shot for every time Nathan Fillion manages to slide a Firefly reference in)

If you're looking for an academic point of view, there are two books of essays on the show (some written by cast members, producers, and writers for the show): Finding Serenity and Serenity Found. I recommend them even if you're just a fan looking for more.

Saw it all just recently for the first time, and loved every goram moment. Casting was perfect, too.

Error. Serenity was designed to wrap up the loose ends in the abruptly canceled series, which it succeeded in doing at about a B- level, but was still good. Unless you have watched the series, however, much of it would be inexplicable. It wasn't intended to be a stand-alone. You really need to know about the seven or eight major continuing characters before you watch the movie.

I don't know - I watched the film first and it made sense to me - so much I had to watch the series.

The film had one of teh best bad guys ever - he knew what he was doing was bad, but he knew he was doing it for a good reason. He was making the verse a better place.

Jayne! The man they call Jayne!

There's probably a reason my text tone is 'Shiny, let's be bad guys'.

I can't imagine diving into Serenity completely new to the Whedonverse the story is set in, altho I suppose millions of people did. I always recommend watching the series first--in the order intended by the creators--not the order FOX (inexplicably) aired them.

That's almost certainly why the movie didn't do as well as people would have liked and why we don't have our Big Damn Trilogy.

That's how I watched it. And it got me hooked for life. I did watch the series chronologically when I got into it, but yeah, saw the movie first.

Well, as I said, that's probably how most fans of the show found their way to it--through the movie. I'm just saying if I meet someone who's never seen any of it, I recommend the series first and then the flick.
