Wow. I didn't know this guy's name until today, but his Narnia covers really helped bring that world to life for me.

Ditto.
And man, it feels so weird whenever someone who had a really big impact on your life dies. When I was younger I just looked at covers and read books and never really thought about the fact that there were real people creating them, like Diana Wynne Jones, Roald Dahl, etc. It's not until later that you really begin to appreciate how much effort it took for them all to do what they did and how much of an impact they really had on your imagination. So I'm sad to see that Leo Dillon is dead, and I hope he rests in peace :/

Oh no! His work was beautiful. It was rare too, to see a husband and wife team up in the way they did with their art. They created some great things together.

He and Diane did covers for Harlan Ellison, Madeleine L'Engle, Ray Bradbury ...
Leo Dillon was the first African-American to win the Caldecott Medal. Some of their magnificent illustrations can be seen on these sites: http://www.wired.com/geekmom/2012/05...llon-has-died/ http://www.raggedclaws.com/home/cate...-diane-dillon/ http://childrensatheneum.blogspot.co...ne-dillon.html http://hannahbirdillustration.blogsp...and-diane.html |
