Metaphor

Metaphor: a statement where one kind of object or idea is used in place of another to suggest analogy by implicit comparison: "Her lips are soft cushions."; “She has the scent of roses.”

**Time out**

I just thought I would comment as to how interesting it is to me that over 100 people have looked at this thread but dared not attempt a metaphor!

What's up with that????????

Remember kids, practice makes perfect.

Sounds familiar?

'The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas'

From 'The Highwayman' by Alfred Noyes...

One of my favorites.

That's a slightly altered line from an Alfred Noyles poem called "The Highwayman."

FWIW, the OP doesn't ask us to try out a metaphor. It just gives a definition and examples.

I will add that I struggle with metaphor, but my best poems, in my own estimation, are those with the best metaphors.

Hello Norman,

Thank you for pointing out that there's been no request for metaphor submissions in the thread. Earlier, in another thread, the idea came up and I just failed to make that clear in this one.

So, now it's clear, the thread is for the purpose of introducing a particular poetic skill and then afford the opportunity to anyone who would like to try their hand at using that skill.

So, have at it.....let's see some metaphors!!

Kid, why not link back to the original resource thread in future exercises to avoid confusion?

My example:

Water is a sneaky weasel, creeping in where it's not allowed and can do the most damage.

(^^Is that actually a metaphor [because of the weasel reference]? Is there any rule that the thing you're comparing to has to be inanimate?)

Thanks...wasn't sure. I like poetry and know some things about it, but I'm far from a pro or expert.

Another metaphor:
