Hi, I'm new here.
Hello,
I found this site when I was searching for proper ways to write a phone dialogue. I'm glad to be here. I belong to a lot of different boards (like for motorcycles, for example, or gorey stuff) but never a writers' board. But I'm on a listserv of writers, which I don't usually read much because it's mostly editors on there trading intel about upcoming RFP's. But I digress. I'll be 41 in September. To call me a failed writer would be dumb since I never finished writing anything. Yesterday I started writing something, it's fiction. I write non-fiction daily as part of my regular activities. Hopefully I will finish this one. I've lowered my objectives for now, trying to go for the short essay. So I will be on here daily, I think it will be good to keep my motivation levels. I will be commenting and giving feedback on whatever requires it and I feel like I can make a contribution to the discussion. As a European I tend to be frank but very precise; feel free to let me know if I was too frank. I sound calm but I'm actually super excited to be here. I think there are a lot of these kinds of writers boards out there but this one looks like a good one. Personal anecdote: my mother is a failed writer, albeit not from lack of trying. She wrote about 75 novels and works of non-fiction and only one got published (and it's a tiny one). She wrote both in English and in French, and attempted (still does, to this day) to get published both in the US and in France, to no avail. One day, she goes to see a clairvoyant and asks her, "will I ever be a successful writer?" The clairvoyant thinks awhile and looks up at her, saying, "No, you will not. But you have a son; he will be the successful writer." So there's that. It's good to be here. Rogan |

Greetings and welcome to the watercooler
Take a wander around the various forums, there's lots to see and lots to learn, and even some fun threads too. Come along and pop on over to the Newbie Pub (at the top of the Newbie forum) and say hi, there's plenty of friendly faces that you can chat with and lots of banter. There's also the Question of the Week thread at the top of the Newbie forum where you can answer random questions. Don't forget to read the newbie guide, and if you want to know what all the buttons mean check out this thread.

Welcome. Your mother must be really dedicated to churn out 75 novels and have only one published. I hope she finally hits it big. She deserves it after that much work.

So Rogan, the question has to be asked, are you an only child? Because I would hate to build up your hopes and find out that you had a brother.
But you know what, you need to go and tell your mother that she is not a failed writer. She has been published. Some of us can only dream of being published. But it's that dream that keeps us all trying. And by all means lets pray that you are the son that the clairvoyant was talking about. |

welcome! I had my own run-in with a palm reader/medium when I was just a teen...she took one look at my hand and said I will never be a compassionate person.
Some days I have agreed with that assessment but for the most part I live to prove her wrong. |
