Hobbit News

The voice in my radio-box just told me some News about the film of The Hobbit.

Wanna hear it?

OK then.

The word on the street is that working with Mr. Jackson will be...
...
Guillermo Del Toro!

*sees sea of blank faces*
Guillermo Del Toro?

Off of Pan's Labyrinth?

Will Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur become a psychotic trinity of nightmarish proportions, rivaling Gollum in obsession, raw-fish-eating, and vindictiveness?

*makes note to run far away from the movie, when it comes out*

That's awesome.

Although Guillermo was rumoured to be doing Harry Potter, and that proved to be false. Still, that would be amazing! Keep us posted!

With Shaye and Lynne reportedly being given the shaft at New Line and Golden Compass not really panning out, this might actually get done. Here's hoping these films give del Toro the juice he needs to make At the Mountains of Madness.

I had heard that Sam Raimi is directing, although I know that sends cringes of fear throughout many of the LOTR fanboys. I'm just hoping I'll see Bruce Campbell cameo.

It occured me that Sam Raimi might actually be a rather good choice.
After all, he and Peter Jackson came from the same Low-budget background. And he's got plenty of flair.

That'd happen.

Although getting 'that raimi car' into it may be a bit of a challenge

Here's an article on the talks. Apparently there's a short list of directors, but it seems that they're going to be very careful in choosing. Given New Line's crap track record since the Trilogy, can't say I blame them.

Peter Jackson has said he doesn't feel he *can* direct it, and the studio agrees -- because he's in the middle of a lawsuit. He was quoted as saying he felt it would be a conflict of interest to direct a film for a company he's engaged in a legal battle with.

Those differences were resolved; hence, why he's on the project.

Geek? Who are they calling "geeks?"

I saw Pan's Labyrinth and quite liked it. Though it was darker by far than most of the movies I normally watch, the fantasy element was quite well done. If PJ can't direct it, then Guillermo Del Toro would be a good choice, given his reputation for respecting source material.

I've been waiting 30 freaking years for this movie--they'd better not mess it up!

I'd say better than quite well done.

Since I haven't read the book, I shouldn't really comment. But I started the thread

I don't know that the dark tone of Pan would be appropriate, but what I learned of Mr Del Toro watching Pan's Labyrinth is that he's got a dead eye for tension. Also, he's got the nouse to show the shocking stuff - not just to shock the audience, but to help the audience appreciate the background of the film.
Given that, and with mr Jackson close by... I think he'd do rather well.

What a surprise -- another hitch:

Tolkien Estate Sues New Line

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/hobbitnews.php?id=41842

Is there anyone Shaye and Lynne or whatever his name is haven't tried to screw (if the estate is right)? Little old ladies on the street, maybe?

did you read the comments? *paraphrase* How much does the Tolkien estate deserve? They didn't do anything to help make the movies.

I'm sure that if that particular idjit was the heir to Tolkien he'd be screaming for his money too. New Line sucks. Period. Toss out the rights to some other movie company and tell NL to go blow themselves.

Yes, the comments on the Comingsoon boards aren't always the most intelligent -- who cares about little things like authors' rights when you need your Peter Jackson/Tolkien fix?

I believe Warners is going to swallow up New Line. I can't believe it wouldn't before finalizing any Hobbit deal, considering Last Mimzy, Golden Compass and the whole audit fiasco.
