Dario D. is well-respected
I just got a response from them today on a query that I sent countless months ago... so I came here to look them up, and see if that's to be expected.

I guess they got backlogged with work, or something.

Me too, Dario--I sent the query in early March, the book has already sold. Nice, professional rejection though.

Okay, so on their website, they give a special e-mail address to write to if you haven't received a reply after three months. You send your automated receipt to them and they write back with the status of your ms.

So now I'm waiting to hear about both the original query and my status query!

I wonder how long it will take...

*sigh*

"In addition, we ask that you submit only one manuscript at a time. Simultaneous submissions will be declined."

Be warned . . .

I submitted one MS query but there was no reply. I forgot about it and sent them a second MS query on a different novel. I got a snitty email response reminding me they already had my earlier submission.

I had something similar happen. I sent them a query about a manuscript that had been revised and cut by 25,000 words. I'd sent them a proposal on the original 10 months earlier. I don't recall them ever having answered the original but it's quite possible they did. The response I received was extremely snitty. It was early in my writing experience and I found it shocking at the time. I didn't write for almost two months after. I 've since sold the book I queried them about and found an excellent agent, but I have to say Prospect left a very bad taste in my mouth and I would never have approached them again, ( except perhaps a XMAS card when I hit the best sellers list lol).

Sorry to hear about your experiences, Carmy and Manat. Congratulations, Manat, on your subsequent success!

So...if they don't respond in the time they themselves have decided upon--or don't respond at all--how is the writer supposed to know if they've passed or if the ms is still under consideration? And how would you know not to submit a different ms?

Anyone have the number for a psychic????

They're definitely running behind. Received a reply to my status query (after 5 days), and they said they've yet to get to my ms.

Has anyone here had any experience with Rachel Orr? She's a new agent at Prospect, coming from being a children's editor at Harper Collins.

I also have a full with Emily Sylvan Kim. She requested it back in August, but I believe their website says wait 3 months before you status query.

FYI, when I contacted Emily Sylvan Kim last August to say I'd been offered representation, she asked me for a few days and then sent me a very polite rejection and her good wishes.

So...still no word on Rachel Orr? I checked Preditors and Editors and she wasn't listed. Does anyone know if she's sold anything yet?

Likewise Becca Stumpf?

Prospect Agency

They seem to have recently taken on a few interns and a reader, the lack of which may have led to long reply times. I sent a query and received a reply back in under three months... though hotmail apparently ate it... In any case, I e-mailed their status people and was given the run down of the original letter in a day or two. Besides the hiccup with hotmail, they seem to be pretty polite and accomodating.

I sent my query to Becca Stumpf, and though she did decline my submission, she apparently (I never saw her actual e-mail) made some good comments and told me to resubmit to Emily Sylvan Kim... I wonder if that's a good thing.

It's a little frightening submitting to the founder. Has anyone had any recent communications with her? I know she accepts sci-fi, but does she prefer uber-sciencey or pseuo-sciencey?

I queried them the second week in January, received their automated response with a submission ID number, and that's that. I haven't heard since, either yea or nay. At this point, either one would be okay!

My last submission to Rachel Orr was 91 days to rejection. I'd already written it off as a Non-response, so *whatever*. Foolishly, I subbed again (different book) and, once more, I'll write them off around first day of spring. Spring housecleaning, you know. I figure if they have any interest, I'd get a request in 4-6 weeks.

appalachian writer, i feel you.
there seems to be no rhyme or reason.
sometimes, i see everyone else get a reject
or partial request who queried AFTER me and
i wonder what the heck is going on.

Xiaotien--Thanks. I spend a lot of time wondering what the heck is going on! What I really hate is when an agency sends you a form letter that says, "although the manuscript had merit." If it's a form letter addressed dear author, how did they know it had merit? Go figure! Prospect agency and all! You'd think they could work a little faster to reject you, huh?

AW, haha! i've "nudged" two agents who
were having writers post both reject and requests
after my query (as in they queried later) and always
got a reject the next day.

i don't care. at least there is closure.

congrats on your partial and full requests!!
i've linked your blog, too, btw. 8)

I'm one of Rachel Orr's clients and if I had to guess I would say the agency got fairly swamped around Christmas time and needed until early February or so to sort things out. Maybe because the interns go home for the holidays? Anyway, things are back to running smoothly now, so submissions should get replies without too much delay.

Good luck.
