I wrote and published my book in French and in France; now I translated it and want to publish it in the USA. First time author, unknown, I have not yet found an agent/publisher. Self-publishing is an option, but how can I be sure I make the right choice? I almost signed with authorhouse, I am in contact with Dorrance; can anybody recommend a reputable, honest publisher? How about IUniverse? Lulu? Books, just books?
Thanks...

If by 'not yet' you mean you still hope to secure a third party publisher you need to hold of on any of these?

You haven't stated if your book is fiction, non-fiction, poetry, or something else. That would be useful to know for anyone trying to give you some advice.

You also haven't indicated if your book was self-published, vanity published, or commercially published in France. That would also be useful to know.

Thanks! I'll answer your questions:
I guess my hope is to find a traditional publisher, but I don't have high hopes; so far, they have turned me down. The only "serious" contacts I have is authorhouse and dorrance, but what I am finding out is not promising.
My book is non-fiction: the story of my family in France in WW2. More specifically, they are from the French province of Alsace which was annexed by Hitler in 1939; I write the stories of 4 soldiers forced into the German army and the Russian front, and 3 women who suffered under the Nazi regime.
It is self-published in France and selling slowly.
I am hoping to do better in the USA...

AuthorHouse and Dorrance are both vanity presses. (As is iUniverse.) Your book won't sell well with them, either.

Books Just Books (http://www.booksjustbooks.com/) and Lulu.com are printers. Again, sales will be slow-to-nonexistent (though with a niche non-fiction work still better than you'd do with a novel).

Try looking for agents who represent non-fiction and history. Submit to them according to their guidelines.

Then find small presses that publish history and non-fiction (particularly those that specialize in WWII).

A copy of Writer's Market will be your friend.

Aim high.

Best of luck.

Go the agent route. It's a tough slog, and may add six months to a year to your effort, but probably your only ticket to real sales. It may also be there are some publishers specialized in this sort of nonfiction that take direct submissions, but a specialized agent will vastly increase your chances.

Find twenty or thirty nonfiction titles centered on World War II. Google the authors with the word "agent" and you will probably be able to find these agents, that is, ones who have dealt with your field. Query them.

If you yourself have translated from French, and are non-native in English, it would be a good idea to get a good English-speaking beta reader to make sure your translation is on the mark. If it's not, you'll just waste time going out to agents.

Good luck!

Thank you!
I'll try the agent approach, together with the WW2 niche.
I am non-native in English, but I've had my book read and corrected by several highly qualified friends, so I am confident that the translation is on the mark.
One more question:
has anybody heard of Tate Publishing? They claim to actually invest time in money in every book they take on, what do you all know?
Thanks!

Tate Publishing are not recommended by P+E as they are a subsidy publisher i.e a pay-to-play outfit

Tate is just another vanity press. Don't do it.

Maryn, vain but not in that way

need advise to publish my book

Thanks everybody.
I did some research and came up with what looks like a small publisher specializing in ww2: Camroc Press
What can you tell me about them?
They only have 2 or 3 books, which are on amazon.

ISBN online

I am trying to get ONE ISBN for my book (going to self-publish, doing the whole thing by myself) Is it safe/OK to use an outfit called isbn4authors.com? They seem pretty legit' but do you know if they are? Any other advise?
isbn.org takes a long time and makes it hard to get just one #, they want to sell blocks of 10.
Thank you!

They make it difficult to buy just one because they aren't in the business of selling numbers to authors--they sell to PUBLISHERS. So, always keep in mind that whoever you buy a single number from: a) will be shown as the PUBLISHER in the U.S. Library of Congress; and b) is selling it to you illegally if they tell you you'll be the publisher instead.

Read this so you understand the consequences. I have been worrying about a number of the legitimate printers for this very reason.

Good luck finding a home for it. Sounds interesting. :)

Their site says: "Starter Publishing Package- $55.00 for BOOKS, CD's DVD's etc..."
I'm very wary. ISBN stands for "international standard BOOK number", so if they're trying to sell you one for CD's or DVD's they're pretty much selling you something useless (apart from perhaps audiobooks on CD).

If you really want to self-publish, go to a company that offers an ISBN in the same breath.

They also seem connected to "Aardvark Global Publishing". which adds to my weariness.

Actually I believe Lulu has worked out a deal with Bowkers where they CAN sell the ISBN to YOU and YOU will be listed as the publisher. Or you can buy one from Lulu, and they will be listed. It's completely legitimate.

Bowkers usually sells in blocks of ten, I think.

You could try Andrew Lownie in London (an Agent) who specialises in non Fiction and he replies really quickly. Your book sounds very interesting.

Check out De Novo Publishing. They're pretty new, but they offer publishing & marketing packages that put iUniverse, AuthorHouse, and the others to shame. I just signed with them, and they're consummate professionals with a great personal touch. Highly recommended.
