You're free to, ya know.

there's not a gd thing about this country that I love. Nothing.

That's pretty sad. Why not move elsewhere, then? I've always thought of love as something of infinite capacity... the more, the better!!!

I could name a hundred things I love about America; many of them have been touched on already. But one thing has really struck me recently. I love our entire, messed up, mixed up, faulty, crazy, confusing, rough-and-tumble political system. I love it.

I lived in China for a year-- and I love that country, too, but in that time I listened to a lot of radio and TV. Controversy is essentially edited out. Unity is emphasized so much that all you see from media is fluff pieces and human interest stories. The government is wonderful, everything is improving constantly, etc. etc.

I come back here to the United States, turn on my radio, and what do I hear? Rush Limbaugh screaming his lungs out about some political outrage or another. Hillary and Obama making snarky comments about each other while simultaneously attempting to appear "nice." My local shock-jocks inciting listeners to lie about their "exposure" to get on the jury to convict a totally corrupt police chief.

We say people are hating each other more and more, that politics is getting so bad... but you know what? Who are we kidding? It's always been like this. All you have to do is go back to all the pamphlets and newspapers from the early days of our nation to see one "founding father" attacking another, viciously.

I love it. I want to throw my arms around all of them. I LOVE that our system WORKS because of the very flaws that make us human. I love that it was designed that way. I love that we're so cynical and nosy that nobody in the government can keep a secret for five days. I love that we all think we can say whatever we damn well want to, and we don't care what others think. As if free speech is not just a basic human right, but a necessity of existence. I love how Americans on vacation are the most obnoxious people on earth. I love how we all drive each other crazy, and yet somehow for the most part we all manage to get along.

Do you know something that really bothers me? US people going around saying "I don't have freedom. This is an Orwellian theocracy" Perhaps they should spent a summer on North Korea, Bosnia, Iran; places that actually suffer... as my dad says "What is Good here (Venezuela) is Regular at best there (USA)"

Sorry to pile on here, Lyx, but I just gotta wonder why you would come into a thread dedicated to talking about what you love about your country to basically say you hate it?

I mean, of course you can do that, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

As for what I love about America?

I love the freedom to travel to any part of the country I like, anytime I like, with no trouble beyond how much it'll cost me.

I love seeing our flag waving in the breeze (Nods to KTC).

I love baseball and football and our silly obsessions with those sports.

I love our public libraries and parks.

I love the crazy mix of foods. There is the BEST El Salvadorean restaraunt down the street that serves the BEST tostadas I've ever eaten. Hands down. Tostadas are a Mexican dish, if I'm not mistaken.

I love Chinese restaurants with a drive through window.

And more....

Unfortunately, many don't comprehend the meaning of freedom, Jo.

Instead, they'd rather rag on the perception that we, in the US don't have freedoms, when in fact, we're the freest country on the planet. Especially, by the broad definition(s) you provided.

That's one of the many things I love about my country, aside from the various intrinsic beauty...on and on, so many to name. I've been fortunate to have traveled to many states, throughout.

One of the many things I love about my country (The United states of America) is that people are free to decide to not like it without fear of reprisal by the government.

And Lyx, try living in another country for awhile. You'll either learn to appreciate your own country or be a happier person for not living here.

Here we go. Look, I figured these standard responses would start. It's just an opinion, guys. Deal with it.
How to fark up a thread.

You don't like it, go somewhere else.

This isn't P&CE, dude. It's OP, in case you hadn't noticed. We don't do rough and tumble in here.

So, you deal w/ it.

And just because I want to be fair, I'll talk about some of the things I love about China. My home for just a year, but still my home.

I love how the concept of personal space is virtually nonexistent.
I love how friends of the same sex, even guys, hold hands and hug.
I love how there are actual stone steps to the top of every tall mountain.
I love how old women in high heels can climb those steps twice as fast as me.
I love how all old people are "grandma" or "grandpa."
I love how rabidly patriotic everyone is.
I love how EVERY FREAKING THING is red.
I love dumplings. Oh, God, how I love dumplings.
And hot pot.
I love split pants and getting to see little bare baby butts.
I love how ANYTHING can be fixed.
I love how every meal has to be fresh.
I love how you can drive five minutes to the mountains and eat the rooster running around in the yard.

I guess that's enough for now. :)

I've taken the liberty of scrolling down the page, and I've no idea what the hell I've done to you to be put on ignore.

Listen, I'm sorry we see things so differently. I just don't get why you take such offense. Literally, I could argue with every viewpoint of your love for this country that you've provided above, but I won't. It'd do no good. Plus, they are all just your opinions. And you have your right to them, as I do to mine.

You baffle me. Consider me baffled.

Oh, I'm getting shivers of jealousy, Jo! I would love to visit China one day...to live there for a year is just an impossible dream. *sigh*

Behind you! Boo.

I'm putting you on ignore because you called Anis "Anus" for no apparent reason.

I don't care what you think about your country.

You know what really bothers me? People who don't realize: no one has total freedom. No one. I never said we don't have it great compared to many countries, we do. But I stand by the fact that we are not free.

Lyx--wasting his time, but can't help himself when bombarded with ignorance.

Freedom of travel is another thing...w/o having your papers checked. Can't even begin to imagine what that would be like.

I'd like to go to China, someday.

Time Out. Please. I am interested in hearing what people love about their country. Maybe all those opposed to the concept of the thread... or feeling the need to argue... can take a step back.

Pretty please. I just want to hear the good stuff, as the thread suggested...

Me too.
