Nicolea opened her eyes and waited for them to come into focus. It was dark and she could barely make out the outline of her own hand let along figure out where she was. Crack!
Lightning flashed through the bared window in the ceiling way above her head. And for a brief moment revealing a dark jail cell with many more on the other side of the building. Crack! Another flash of lightening showed a man in the cell across from hers. Nicolea heard footsteps… and a door creek open, voices speaking in low whispers and then pain… right before she was knocked unconscious she saw two men leaving her cell.

One I just typed.

“Ready?” he asked.
Erik nodded, though apprehensively. He wasn’t ready. He didn’t even know what it was he wasn’t ready for, but he knew he wasn’t ready for it.

My name is Lana. I am thirteen years old. I live in darkness.

I'm not totally sure if the character in question is even supposed to have a name yet, but... oh, well.

Your hands are strong, but gentle. They remind me of…of…I know their names. Wait, this isn’t right. What are their names? I promised them, I’d remember them. All of them. There were so many. So many.

From the WIP I'm revising:

She glanced at a vase of flowers on the end table. The flowers were bright and vivid, a rainbow of colors in full bloom, and yet to her, there was something missing as though the life was slowly draining from the brilliant petals, as though she could see that though they were in bloom, they’d been dying since the moment they were severed from their roots.

Just wrote this...

The palace hall was not at all what Matthew had expected. But then again, when it comes to things of the Universe, they very rarely are.
Rather than opulence of an unimaginable nature, the entryway was closer to a Quicky Lube waiting room, complete with stale coffee, year old magazines, and a soda machine that required exact change.

"You think there's enough ice in here to fill a bathtub with?" he said, peering into the machine.
"Probably not." Maddy reached around him with the ice bucket. "You harvesting organs again?"
"Yeah. I just sold Johnny's kidneys on eBay. Now I just gotta figure out how to knock him out."
"Hit him over the head with the ice bucket. More to the point, how are you going to find his kidneys? That stuff in there isn't labelled, you know."
"I'll find them. I got a cool half million on this deal."
"Each?"
"Nope. Package deal. Wonder how much I could get for his other organs?"
"Hey. Ground rules." Johnny poked his head out of his room, which was, yes, next to the ice machine. "One, no selling band stuff on eBay. And two, leave my internal organs out of this." He was almost sure the bassist was joking...

(Okay, it's more than a line, but it was kind of darkly funny...)

"The events you have set in motion cannot be stopped."

You can bet someone important dies within the five seconds following that line.

What, you expected me to post something that hasn't been in my sig for ages? Why would I do that?

Maybe I shouldn't read Robert B. Parker and Pratchett so close together...

"My eyes followed her across the room; luckily, they were well trained, and didn't jump on her and try to hump her leg."

Probably won't use it, but it's still my favorite at the moment.

Isabela shook her head and smiled, a tiny smile as delicate as a butterfly’s wings spreading out to take flight against a midnight sky.

More than one line, but it's the thing that is amusing me today:

“The novelty of this place has quite worn off, and I have decided it is time to go. If you’ll excuse me.” The men of third shift watched in slack-jawed amazement as Keras borrowed a sledge hammer from the nearest inmate, calmly walked up behind his own foreman, and bashed the man in the head with it.

I'm still working on this:

Once he was wounded severely enough, Mickey would finger the bruise anew every time he was reminded of it – reliving the pain and refocusing the blame. If he walked into that house he would poke and prod himself to find the sore spots and reclaim the ache and anger she had left. He would feel them all over again then sulk about it for days.

I probably won't be keep this section of the story -- have a complete rewrite in mind, but I like this line:

The house would be filled from bottom floor to top, from wall to wall, with drunk soldiers on leave who were as determined to have a good time as they were to avoid becoming future corpses.

Cicadas had got to sing, dance and mate before the last leaves fell.

I actually have several from different stories I have wrote.

"Each frame is perfect," Brooklyn said gazing over the sheet of untouched photos.
Michael shrugged at her. "No one is perfect. It is all about the right elements. Take away the lighting, the make-up and the clothes and you have..."
"A vapid, rancid, narcissistic b*tch?"
"I was going to say small town girl. But yours has such a better ring to it don't ya think?" (from One Night in Vegas)

Sophia popped the cork of the champagne and poured everyone a drink. Kiera devoured hers not waiting for the toast. She needed alcohol and lots of it.
"Damn, Kiki," Marco laughed. "No one likes the drunk friend."
"Marco," she shrieked.
"Somehow I believe that this is going to be the highlight of this weekend. I would bet my life on it."
Kiera turned to Sophia. "Somehow, he is so fired." (from Life Interrupted)

"We are a close group. It wasn't a coincidence that you ended up here with us. It is where we all came when we wanted to escape the mediocrity of our every day lives. When we wanted something more than the expected. We came here to start anew."
"You make this sound like a cult."
"Not a cult," Marcus replied. "More like a family."
She laughed. "A family, eh? What does that make me and Deacon? Kissing cousins?" (From The Den of Demons)

"Well at least he will be out of your hair," Acacia stated. "You are heading back to London with us tomorrow. We have to get you fitted for your wedding gown. At least someone in this family can wear white legitimately." (from A Rogue Transformed)

So let the mosquitoes bite, let the humidity hang in the air like a weight, because it’s hard not to enjoy a cook-out, even on a hot summer evening, no matter how old you are, the number of platinum records you’ve sold, or the amount of knives you’ve thrown at a man who eats fire for a living.

Back from vacation and hopefully back to my regular writing schedule. Here's from this morning:

A very large crow appeared as a black speck in the sky and grew larger as it descended, finally landing on the sidewalk. It began picking at the remains of something that at one time might have had fur, but was now mostly just another blemish in the cement.

..."Cut it out. I've got a huge problem." Maddy frowned at the papers. "The invoice doen't match the manifest."
"Bananafest?" Joey said from the other room, bewildered.
"The manifest," Maddy called back as Jimmy burst out laughing.

ETA - Based on a true story, except I'm the one who thought someone said "Bananafest."

My poor hero's having a rough life. But it will all be worth it in the end.

Maybe it was simply because he had been given the gift of complete and total awareness of his spirit that the time spent in the In Between was clear in his memory. His encounter with the Almighty and the Son, the meeting with the artist spirit of Cleotonia, the Begonias, and the short period he spent with his beloved all seemed as though it had taken place just seconds ago. That combined with the fact that apparently he was sitting in his own pee made him more determined than ever to get off his duff and pull his life around.
