I've never heard of this show "Mel..."

When was it on and what was the theme song like?

Mel... was the greatest show, still in production, going on season 34, but we haven't decided on a theme song yet

scratchingcat is on a distinguished road
Family Guy

and of course the one it is ripped off from

All in the Family

I also like the BSG one and the one from House.

And for only one note, the 'pling' from Law and Order is pretty impressive.

But the theme music I like the most of all shows has to be the intro to Quantum Leap.

I'll cast my vote for the Whedon shows and House, and I'll also add the theme from Bones, by Crystal Method.

Friday Night Lights has really good theme music. Not sure if I think it's great because it actually is or because whenever I hear it, I think of the show and how wonderful it is.

Firefly (like others have said)
FarScape (both versions)
M*A*S*H

And, I actually do like the opening theme for Enterprise

I always have had a fondness for the theme from "Mr. Lucky", a forgettable early 1960s series, but the theme was written by Henry Mancini, and remains a staple of student jazz musicians.

Well, Firefly tops the list.

The others I thought of weren't written for the show. So they may not count.
They are:
Peep Show (after series 1)
Jonathon Creek.
