oh mario I am right there with you, baby. I have no words of advice or wisdom, but thanks for making me feel less alone.
Lately I've come up with a new life philosophy: f*ck success.
I've spent seven years trying to play the game, give people something just new enough to be exciting, just familiar enough to be marketable, and it's gotten me squat -- two agents, two and a half manuscripts, and a truckload of "well this is nice, but..."
And I finally realized, the artists (writers, musicians, filmmakers, whatever) I respect and admire never set out to produce something safe and marketable. They worried about their art first, and at first, they may only have been appreciated by a handful of friends and hardcore fans. And even today, they might not be best sellers, but they have a loyal following who appreciates the truly meaningful work they do. And I figure -- that's good enough for me. so f*ck success.
