My first three sentences:
There are many priests who believe exclusively in their own god and deny not only the existence of other gods but even the slight possibility of the existence of any other god. Those priests are in for quite a surprise when, upon entering the afterlife, they realize their god is actually a trainee god that gets send out all the time to bring doughnuts and coffee to the real gods. This is a simple example to show the danger of denying things.

From something that's not exactly a WIP -- the first half-chapter or so came at me in a rush, and then nothing. I'm letting it simmer.

I met the great love of my life on my wedding day. I didn’t pay him any mind then, of course. Before the ceremony I was busy throwing up, and hoping that the groom would show and that my father wouldn’t, and praying that all the old biddies would carefully not notice how big my premature baby was when I delivered it in seven months.

I just wrote this last night. The first three sentences of my third novel.

Audwin sat, arms crossed, with his legs dangling over the summit. The pre-dawn sky reflected grayish-blue off the glassy-green surface of Sunrise Sea. Behind him, whistling and squawking and squeaking calls of birds and other forest dwellers formed a chorus that welcomed the new day.

It never fails. At least once a week, for the past few months I wake up thirsty.
Now I know there isn't a monster under my bed. I know this.

I wish I could tell you there were such things as happy endings. Unfortunately, I'd then have to lie and say the boogie man doesn't lurk under the bed, and Santa isn't actually a pagan god who collects the souls of naughty children. The problem with fairy tales is they never were meant to be vomit- inducingly happy.

Very interesting Varthikes, I like it. And yes Meadow yours doesn't tell alot, but it is intrigueing!

Here's mine:

I was born with this curse. From day one I was able to see things that any normal person couldn’t, and from day one I was forced to keep it a secret. If I were to look for one second too long at their abnormally sharp angled, beautiful faces, they would kill me, and they wouldn’t do it quickly either.

Here's the first three sentences from my WIP, "Died Laughing":

An anonymous tip came through yesterday.

The man we were looking for—the one who made off with Margaret Reverie, the eight-year-old daughter of controversial talk radio personality, Gail Reverie, nearly three weeks ago—would show up at The Fresh Fish around 8:30pm. There wasn’t any more to it than that.

Heres the first three, but you will need the rest to understand it.

Have you ever had one of those times when you wish that you had never done something? You know, one of those “If Only” moments where you say that you should not have done whatever it was that you were doing. Even if it was following orders.

Well, I know I have. In fact that’s how I feel right now. Like, it’s not even a joke. I was supposed to have a regular day at home, with nothing to worry about except parties, my dad, my girlfriend, and…..that’s pretty much it. That was, until I came home today and found myself up to my neck in small and deadly monsters.

“That is one psychedelic hickey you’ve got there,” Dawn said, greeting her friend Carmen at the front door of her farmhouse. Carmen put a hand around her neck protectively and cringed at her friend’s observation. She wasn’t embarrassed.

Of course, sentence four explains WHY she wasn't embarrassed...

From a possible WIP called Hero:

Have you ever done something amazing?

The sky was so blue that day. Bluer than the sea, with bruised pockets spread throughout it where men and metal had simultaneously tried to exist and failed.

This is a story about a paralytic.
This is a story about achieving the impossible.
Most importantly, this is a story about love.

I like this. Like, a lot. Now if only I could create a voice just as good...

From yet another new short that wants to be a novel, one I have yet to title:

Three boys hunkered over the walleye, and one of them nudged it with a small stick he'd found on the way down to the river. They looked at each other solemnly, and the biggest of the three boys picked the fish up by the tail fin. Its body flexed, and the boy dropped it with a started yell.

this is a fun little exercise. Well, here you go.

Broodie cut the antigrav to half power, activated stealth mode, and glided his cruiser the remaining kilo-click to his Aerocile. If the gods were with him, Claire3 would be in her charging silo, and he could slide into bed without a night of bickering.

His mansion came into view, floating amidst the cumulus clouds set aglow by the blue light of Osidin’s two moons.

What ya think :)

"We're going broke! The rent's getting up, the car ins--"
Steve replied, "Colin, I've known that for months."
--Vampire/Amazon

"Hello, we're passing out fliers for the new water park--"
I slammed the door on the woman's foot. She interrupted my sleep.
--Argue With Me

Yeah, may have to change them. I read somewhere that starting with a quote was overdone.

Meh, don't have to worry about them before finishing the alphas.

From my fantasy WIP, very rough because this is my first draft:

She could not remember being taken from her parents and smuggled onto the island, but she knew it happened. She had been told the story until she could easily recite each step of the journey herself. Instead of play, there was always study, and her own history was as important a subject as any other.
