Oh, what mystery series is this? Please help me!
So I saw this mystery series on an endcap at the bookstore over the weekend, and they looked really interesting and now I'm really regretting not buying one of the books because I forgot the name! I tried googling but I failed. Here's what I remember-
-Writer is from the UK somewhere. -There's a detective duo. -They investigate weird cases. The name of the series was something like curious cases or weird mysteries or something. Emphasis on the cases being weird, but I'm not sure if there are fantastical elements. I believe there was like one about a mysterious box, and one about mysterious rooms maybe? -There are at least three books in the series out in trade paperback, each one was a different solid color with a drawing on the front. -The books don't have that serious! danger! and killing! sort of covers like some mysteries have, they look a bit more like contemporary novels. I'm not sure if they're cozies or not. What books are these? Any help is greatly appreciated! Last edited by Kitty Pryde; 08-07-2009 at 08:45 AM. |

GAH! I spent half an hour hassling the staff at the local indie bookstore, and I have been googling for three hours, and my brain has turned to delicious google-flavored pudding, but I found it.
It's the Bryant and May Peculiar Crimes Unit series by Christopher Fowler. "Full Dark House" is the first one. Anywaaaaaays, they look really good. That is all. http://mysteriousgalaxy.booksense.co...=9780553385533 |

Glad you found it!
You might also look for 3-4 books by PJ Tracy - a mother-daughter duo. Mystery, crime, some weird characters, murder...... |

"Bryant and May"? I think it's an inside joke. Somewhere in all my stuff, I have a matchbox from the UK made by Bryant and May ('Brymay' Brand)

Bryant and May did, and maybe still do, make matches - the factory is in Bow, East London. The building, which is now flats, was the site of the 1888 Match Girls Strike. Why do I know all this? I used to teach in the area and could see the factory from my class room window!
The books do sound interesting.

Yes! Like the matches! They did make a reference to that in the book, actually. And I believe their special police organization office was located IN Bow.
I just finished the first book in the series. It was soooooo good. Great writing and great mystery. I would recommend it highly to anyone. I'm only rarely a mystery reader, but this one was excellent. |
