It was so long ago that I can't remember the marriage proposal. But it was probably one of those naked in bed moments.

I once had a girl's father propose to me with a shotgun.

A cab driver in NYC proposed to me once.
A homeless man proposed to me once.
A drug dealer proposed to me once.
The man I want to marry hasn't proposed yet. I'll drag this thread up when he does.

However, I have yet to meet anyone who can top my friend Cathy's engagement story in terms of fairy-tale status. Her (now) husband, Sotirios (he's Greek, btw, of COURSE) really pulled out all the stops.

Sotirios wakes her up, and tells her to get her passport - but no bags. (He had several packed.) They were living in London at the time. He flies her to Austria. They spend the day walking around Vienna. They get back to their posh hotel room, and he tells her to take a shower. She comes out and the bed is COVERED in stuff.

Every SINGLE thing she wore that night was new. New dress, new shoes, new pearls, new fur shawls, new earrings, new perfume, new lingerie, EVERYTHING.

He takes her to the opera. He has, of course, purchased a whole box. He proposes during intermission. She accepts. They take a horse-drawn carriage ride around Vienna.

Here she is in her hotel room, putting on all her new stuff. Magic, baby. Magic. They had their wedding in Paris. I had finals, and couldn't go. LAME.

I spy with my little jealous eye a Tiffany's blue box....

I'm sure she loved it, and that it's many a woman's dream come true, but that whole thing gives me the willies. :D

Going to jump in:

We were both in the Army. I asked him. He took a (very brief) moment, and agreed. We agreed to wait a little longer so that we knew what we were getting into.
Later, we married...now start a thread about the actual getting married and I'll give you my sad, semi-pathetic version of that.

Well...*

She was a rich westerner, with money to burn and a taste for the exotic.

I was a young mail-order bridegroom, with nothing but a sequined suit and a dream of a better life.

It was a match made in heaven with a mastercard.

Ditto. I'm much more pragmatic than that. I'd prefer a down-to-Earth, "So, are we gonna get married or what?"

Proposals and weddings means next to nothing to me; I prefer to concentrate on the marriage.

*exits stage left, still single...*

Yeppers, I'm with you on this one. It could be a fairy tale or it could be the premise of a Lifetime movie about a psychopathic kidnapper... really, it can go either way. If somebody took me to another country, told me to shower and put on the clothes he picked out for me, I'd be majorly freaked.

I'm with sheepy on this one. I'm a serious jeans and t-shirt kind of girl and THANK GOD my hubby is jeans and t-shirt kind of guy. (Every once in awhile he tells me I would look pretty in a dress. So then I have to tell him HE would look pretty in a dress...and then we play/argue and the whole thing gets dropped). If my husband would have proposed like this I probably would have run away. It would have made me sickly uncomfortable. I'm glad she had her fairy-tale though. We all have them, they're just all a little different. I prefer happy hour snacks and grocery shopping in my pajamas.

Heh... Well... Everyone hates it. Or maybe they're saving face? It's something I might do... I don't see how the man of your dreams saying "Surprise vacation!" would freak out anyone... o_O It's not like they dated for ten minutes and he did this. Would it REALLY "freak" people out if the man you were in love with and wanted to marry took you for a surprise trip? I would be a wee bit scared of the state of my relationship if that sort of spontaneity on the part of my partner caused me alarm.

I should mention on their third date he flew her to a castle for lunch. So the engagement is pretty much on par (or perhaps it was a step down) with how they live their lives. They jet off to India or Greece or Brazil on a regular basis, for no good reason other than "It'll be FUN!"

I imagine when you're young, beautiful, and rich beyond description, it doesn't creep you out to live like it. Engagements included.

My husband proposed at a Renaissance Fair. He was dressed in a kilt. I was all decked out as well. It was my first so we went all out. About halfway through the day we took a walk through the woods of the Fairy Court. We made our way off the beaten track. Isolated, with nothing but the beautiful melody of a violin drifting through the trees, he took my hands and asked. It was so sweet. How could I have resisted? Our four year anniversary is in October.

Isn't that the plot for Pretty Woman?

I kid, I kid...but this would be a better story if she had told some old woman at the opera that she peed her pants, lol.

I had only been going out with my husband for a year, and on my 29th birthday I was sitting on the lounge laughing about something stupid on the tv and he looked really worried and knelt down in front of me, and I thought, what on earth is wrong with you, then I thought, oh, no, he can't possibly being going to say that...and well he asked me to marry him, and it took me completely by suprise, but I never hesitated, and we got married the following year on my 30th birthday, had our daughter two days after my 31st birthday and were still together and happy.
