Saw it the same day as seeing Halloween 2.
Both the 3D and NON 3D versions of this movie were packed out.
The movie was witty and interesting, didn't take itself too seriously. WAY upped the use of 3D.
Was it gimmicky? Uhm, only if you consider having chicken in your chicken McNuggets to be a gimmick. It was 3D!! What the hell do people expect? Of course stuff went flying and jumping and stabbing. It was a horror movie and people payed extra to see it in 3D. This wasn't UP.
I am now officially convinced that the JUMP OUT AT YOU scenes in modern 3D can't work as well as the old anaglyphic did. But the depth is much better in new 3D. And there is no bleeding of colors.
I found the characters to be interesting, not too over the top. I found the kills to be surprising and it kept me interested. I tried to watch some scenes of Halloween 2 twice and I wouldn't have killed someone to get a fast forward remote.
Not so for FD4. I didn't mind watching part of the movie again. (Of course, the 3D helped) but in this case it ADDED to the movie and the experience.
Horror like this is over the top and hyped and flashy. It makes perfect sense for it to be in 3D and I enjoyed it. From what I can see, the audiences leaving FD4 were happier and looked more satisfied than those I saw leaving the Halloween 2 showings. And this is from both the 3D and NON 3D versions showing at my theater.
