I'm glad you didn't die, SD.

My brain did, though. Urk.

Good morning, everyone.

It's national Support A Jacobean Catholic Terrorist Day. HOORAY! I LOVE fireworks! Unfortunately, 'spiss'n'i'doon, and there's nothing like a bit of torrential rain to dampen a bonfire. But hooray anyway. At least I don't have to go to the Scottish Parliament and have the pants bored off me by a bunch of tedious speeches. Me and my DS are going to have a fun afternoon alone in the office.

Hope everyone's well today x

Weren't you supposed to blow up a Parliament with those fireworks?

What do you mean 'you'? I'm not that old!

Yeah, James VI and I was supposed to emancipate the Catholics when he took the throne in 1603, but when he made it to England he realised he just couldn't. He grew up in Scotland where his mother (Mary Queen of Scots) was the Catholic monarch of a Protestant country, but she didn't actually mind so didn't make any moves to curb Protestantism or make life difficult for them. James purported to be astonished at the deep feelings against Catholics in England, although I think it's fair to say he should really have known and if he genuinely didn't (which I don't believe) he shouldn't have made any promises to anyone until he knew what was going on.

Of course, when he came to England to take the throne from Elizabeth the first, he became James the first of England, the first of the Stuart line of English Monarchs. Irrelevant info. But, anyway, happy fireworks night/guy fawkes night/whatever you want to call it. Did you know that somewhere, can't remember the town, is burning a huge Katie Price!

Edenbridge in sunny ol' Kent.

He's supposed to be known as James I and IV but I call him VI and I because he was ours first. Plus, James VII and II is pretty much ALWAYS just called James II when he really, really isn't. James VII was deposed for being a Catholic by William III (of Orange) in 1690 then it went back to Stuart when William and Mary died childless, so Anne was the last Stuart monarch. Then those funny Hanoverians came in.

But yeah, only the British would celebrate a terrorist who tried to blow up the king.
