Can people please *gently* crit my half chapter 1 pleaase? It would be greatly appreciated - something just isn't right and I'm not sure what. I don't think it;s very gripping, either.

Magic, I like it! I do think it is gripping. The only thing I would say is that I was confused who was who. You introduced a lot of characters there and I wasn't sure about the relationship between most of them. I had to go back and read over the first paragraph to "get it" too... but that might be me tonight.
