Other Graphic Novels I've thought of last night:

Will Eisner's Dropsie Avenue and A Contract with God and Other Tenement Stories

Joe Kubert: Fax from Sarajevo, (with Ervin Rustemagić, a comic agent trapped in Sarajevo during the seige in the Bosnian War) and Yossel: April 19, 1943

Kitty Pryde

Ooh! "The Rabbi's Cat" by Joann Sfar. It would be fun to discuss in a class--it's got lots of historical and philosophical type stuff in it.

I'm considering suggesting Drowtales: Moonless Age, it's written in English, and left to right, but it has the manga style of exaggerating emotions.
Any syllabus of graphic novels would be pretty poor if it didn't include at least 1/3 translated manga/manhwa. I have nothing against Drowtales, there might be other good reasons to recommend it, just wanted to point out that the points you mentioned aren't important if you're already got a healthy selection of real manga.

The first volume of Elfquest is a possibility - I like those because they are in full color, and they have a focus on the adventures/evolution of a community which is pretty unique.

And, do the choices all have to be fiction? Because Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics would practically teach half the class for the professor! lol

Battle Angel Alita and/or Battle Angel Alita:Last Order, think they're worth mentioning, or Ghost in the Shell, they both deal with the whole, 'is a human a human if they're just a brain in a case.' Alita goes even further with the whole machine acting like a human as the main character, though we don't know that until later.

What about Eric Shanower's "Age of Bronze"? The Iliad in graphic form? Not complete yet, but at least for purposes of comparison with the original?
