space opera on the rise?

There's more to science fiction than just "Hard SF". Still, a bit of realism goes a long way.

Give me a pair of MK XXVII DeLameters and I'm fine; though I'll settle for Lewiston MK XVII's if I have to.

I have a concept for a Space Opera that I'm holding off on til I can flesh it out a bit better - sorta a Firefly meets Starcraft idea, where a race of cybernetic lifeforms called the Drakkon have taken over our Solar System in an effort to gain resources to fight an ancient enemy of there's and enslaved the human race while an underground human resistance movement based off of Io is sabotaging their efforts. The main characters are in a Firefly stylish ship in the Resistance.

The whole inspiration for it was a space-worthy variation on the battle armor from Starship Troopers (the book, not the crappy Hollywood movie). I just pictured an intro scene with a Drakkon capitolship being assaulted by the main characters in those type of suits. They latch on to the ship, cut a hole in the hull, and take over primary systems - then vent all life-support, effectively destroying the ship from the inside out.

For Space Opera, I find it amusing that while I grew up reading a fair chunk of it, and writing fan fic, I've never attempted a serious Space Opera work. Sometime I few years back I got derailed off SciFi and got stuck in fantasy.

I can just shine something nice and innocuous on that Mad Cat: like a Sun Beam.

I'm almost the same: I've written one space opera, but mostly I focus on fantasy.
