I recently received email contracts for 3 books they wanted to e-publish. One, only, is complete. The contracts called for the author to aggressively promote the books. A Google showed me the person who sent the contracts is very involved in a book promotion company. Their first publications seem to have been erotica, though their limited catalog has a variety of topics. They claim, too, to be starting a new wing to publish youth and spiritual books.

When I questioned the "promotional contribution" required by the contract, the responder said all publishers require authors to aggressively sell their books, and that my negative attitude didn't bode well for a continued relationship. They withdrew their offer.

The company is from Toronto, Canada. I don't think I made a mistake in being cynical, and I don't want to give the impression that I know they are a scam.

Anyone have more to say about xoxo publishing?

Paul

One last note. I have messaged with Gina C. on Facebook. She says in one of her responses that XOXO publishings has been banned from posting on Absolute Write. If this is true, why? They should be able to defend their business practices even if we disagree with them. How can we find whether XOXO has been 'banned'?

Paul thank you for your interest in XoXo Publishing but at this time due to all of the bad publicity which has been posted on Absolute Write and which they have not given us an opportunity to explain any of the postings since we have been banned without cause. We at XoXo Publishing and our legal counselors have agreed not to accept any of your work which we have already stated in our last email. Wishing you all the best."

I haven't banned anyone identified with XoXo. It's not uncommon, however, for folks to sign up but not complete the registration process, so they can't post. If she's having trouble posting, she needs to contact an an Admin.

When someone is banned on the forum, it says so in their user title (the line below the username). So you can see at a glance that no one who posted on the thread has been banned.

When a post is deleted, it'll stay in the thread listing, so you'll know a post was there. There aren't any deleted posts by them.

In other words, they've simply not signed up and posted anything (or if one of the previous posters was officially representing them... they just haven't come back and answered the questions).

Message her back and tell her she's not banned and never has been, the fact confirmed by two moderators. Have her check through the registration process again. We would welcome her to come in and sort things out with facts.

There have been negative comments about XoXo, but that's normal in a forum like this. It is not the same thing as negative publicity.

We understand that TWO individuals, purporting to be with XoXo, have generated the negativity. They came in with guns blazing, defending, attacking, and otherwise not doing the company any favors with their attitude.

But that's just two people, and take it as read that we are discounting their behavior and are willing to accept that it is not representative of the company itself.

We're waiting for a true representative of XoXo to come in, do some damage control, and reply to the questions that have now been posted several times on this thread.

If XoXo is unable to address such basic questions in a calm, professional manner, then writers can't help but conclude that the house is simply not up to the job and will submit work to another venue.

XoXo will have missed a great opportunity to turn things around and make friends!

Yeah. Let me just confirm that I've got no record of XoXo Publishing ever even opening an account here, not under that name.

Chill pills and decaff, people. They're pool shy as it is, thinking this is a 24/7 shark tank.

I know two people were not well-received here, but I'm willing to ignore them as being not representative of XoXo.

Let's give XoXo a chance to show some professionalism, and please, let us return the favor.

confirmation of your request

I have messaged Gina Cianfranni (sp?) that she is welcome here and encouraged her to dialogue with us. I hope she doesn't pull her 'legal advisers' out of the back room to say that she would be ruining her 'slander' case if she talks to us. Just kidding. Let us hope she decides to come around, search for this discussion, and blow our socks off with cogent answers to our constant questions.

Yes, let Gina answer for herself our concerns about the link between XoXo and The Book Promotion People. Why *does* XoXo steer newbie authors to that firm? What about Gina herself, who works for both companies? Isn't that a conflict of interest?

First off, I can happily say that I am an employee with XOXOPublishing since its conception. Our company is legitimate. It is unprofessional and rude for any person, whether you are a writer or other business to state our company is a scam, when in fact we are not. I would advise that you get your facts straight before making that assumption. Providing falsified information after searching for every bit you can find, then posting in online or anywhere constitutes harassment, malicious slander and cyber stalking.

Your understanding of the law is extremely shaky at best.

IAMACAD, the members of AW are asking reasonable questions of the company, the same questions we would address to any new publisher.

Simply telling the world that Xoxo is legit is not enough. We've seen plenty of less than sterling venues also claim they are legit. Because of them, we are often suspicious and quick to slap on warning labels. Expect the world to be unprofessional and rude, that's just how it is.

How Xoxo responds to that informs us just how professional IT is.

We are hoping that a representative of the company who is in a position to address those questions in a simple and direct manner will sort things out to everyone's satisfaction.

Lucy was quoting IAMCAD. I've fixed the quote tag in her post to make that clear.

So, I remain the only fledgling author to have been rejected by xoxo publishing? A rather exclusive club. I invite all of you to join me. Send your best work to them and see if they respond with a contract. Who knows? Perhaps you will catch a neutrino. If they don't, I won't be so lonely.

They've had enough time to respond. Time to call them what they are. "Non-Responders!"

bfloxword, *everyone* gets rejected. It's never personal; it just means the work ain't right for them or it might not be ready.

In this case, considering the lack of response and lack of professionalism from the house's supporters, I'd say you dodged a bullet.

Back in the day, I sent a fantasy to a mystery house, I was that green about how things work. (Wincing.) That was the start of the 25+ rejections I collected for that book, rewriting it over the next 2 years until it was something worth buying, and I worked on the next 2 books so my head wouldn't explode.

Twenty years later, I've got an impressive resume, but recently sent out a story to a magazine, fully aware that it might not trip their trigger. If it gets rejected, then I'll send it to another venue.

But I'm hoping!!! ;)

We all get a bloody nose; me, Uncle Jim, heck, even Stephen King had trouble getting things sold once--you put on your game face and keep writing.

This is all one person: the boss, the employee, the author, the book promotion people, the in-house media department, the book cover designer, the sockpuppets, and for all I know the sisters as well. If there is a separate sister, she must be a silent partner.

The employee talks like the head of the company, and says she's been there "since its conception." Her remarks betray no hesitancy about speaking for her employer, no suggestion that her boss's opinions, his priorities, or his strategies for dealing with the public might be different from her own. This is someone who's certain that she and the company are as one.

She also sounds that way when she's speaking as the author, the book designer, and so forth. None of the XOXO personae we've seen here have out-of-synch understandings of what XOXO does, or what their own place is in it. Neither do they have differentiated vocabularies, tone, attitudes, or styles of argument. They mistakenly believe themselves to be well-educated, and aren't afraid to say so at irrelevant moments. They all have exactly the same bad grammar, which is impossible. And they're all certain that our failure to admire and respect them can only mean that we don't understand them.

Moving on --

Miss XOXO's writing advice and her grasp of how publishing works are both deeply flawed.
I must say that, as with any publishing company, rudeness, attitude and outright decline to help promote yourself will get any and all offers withdrawn.
Excuse me while I roll on the floor laughing. This universal custom of publishing companies is the reason all authors (especially the bestselling ones) are always meek, reasonable, and well-behaved, right?

Here's a prize quote:
You are under the assumption that ALL Publishers are the same, but as the times are changing, nothing stays the same, you should know that, and note I said "should".
The reason I dislike the annual Bulwer-Lytton competition is that people who are trying to write bad sentences never come up with the kind of masterpieces bad writers can toss off without a moment's thought.
If a company like the manuscript from reading only a portion of it what is wrong with that?
There are a lot of things wrong with it. I'll go with the two biggest. First: someone who doesn't know how often books fall apart past the halfway point is not an acquiring editor, and probably don't qualify as a slush reader.

Second: like most sockpuppeteers, Miss XOXO can't keep her characters straight. The cover designer ought not be the one defending XOXO's editorial practices.
Obviously they noticed potential in it, and therefore decided to give it a go, its called "trial and error" in most cases, but that publisher seen more into it and wanted to publish it. How hard is it to understand that companies run things the way they chose to as long as they follow guidelines and regulations, which this company is doing, if you liked in Canada, you would know that, providing you knew anything of the company at all, and im not talking about what you think you know either.
This is a deservedly frustrated writer.
Hi All ~

Right up front I want to state I am the Public Relations Director for XOXO Publishing. In that respect I have read this thread with great interest.
A startup e-publisher has hired a PR Director? Furthermore, someone with a name this distinctive, who works in public relations, has no footprint on Google except for hits that are directly tied to XOXO publishing? Do they think we were born yesterday?

"Oh, I am a cook and a captain bold,
And the mate of the Nancy brig,
And a bo'sun tight, and a midshipmite,
And the crew of the captain's gig!"

Yeah? How about "In a burst of blood and baby she died"? or "We are a-done for a-now, let us have sex!"

It is my opinion that while IAMCAD and Tiki20021 are almost certainly the same person, AmyCatlinWozniak almost certainly is someone else.

What concerns me most about XoXo as an ebook publisher is that their ebooks don't seem to be available in the usual places you'd expect to go to find ebooks.

And The Yarn of the Nancy Bell being about a starving crew who ate each other.

Most apt, Uncle Jim! What a tickle to see it again.

I got an A+ in senior drama class for my dramatic recitation of that one! :D

'For a month we'd neither wittles nor drink,
Till a-hungry we did feel,
So we drawed a lot, and, accordin' shot
The captain for our meal.

Not that anyone at Xoxo should do any such thing! Canadian McDonalds do an excellent lunch!

I protest that both those lines were written by one alarmingly talented young writer. I only know of one other author who was capable of writing badfic at that transcendent level while still in her teens, and that was Jane Austen; so I think it's fair to classify this one as an outlier.

Reviewing my posting history for 2010, I was inspired to go to XoXo's site once more to see if their image has improved.

On the face of it, I would say they have addressed issues we had with their new venture. Some things not previously detailed or explained are now available.

their Facebook page seems to have gone dormant.

I hope they have decided to be more forthcoming and will join the fun here on AW.C

An author acquaintance of mine said her experience with them hasn't been good. They seem to expect anthology authors to pay for copies of books, they don't--apparently--give contributor's copies of anthologies. Not sure if they give authors of one person works copies or not.
