"Cautious optimism" for me. Everything that comes out of the East lately has been grind this, grind that, grind grind grind.

Here's hoping that this new wave of MMOs coming out will have a bit more meat to them.

This. A thousand time this.

Final Fantasy 13 was a horrible grindfest down a corridor. A very beautiful looking corridor, I hasten to add, but a corridor nonetheless.

The short gap between FF13 and this is something of a concern for me. But we'll see how it turns out.

So, Open Beta was scheduled for August 31st.
They sent out all the e-mails and everything. And then found out critical errors.
So it'll be later. >.>

I'm still on the fence about giving this a try. I played XI for a few years and while I did enjoy it a lot, it also brought out the worst of my obsessive side. It's so very easy to get sucked in. I did love the community though, made a lot of good friends.

Have they really said that this is going to be drastically different from FF11? Because so far, it looks incredibly similar in overall gameplay, except a slightly different combat system. If that's the case, I imagine it'll be a mindless, slow grindfest like FF11. Grinding is bad in most MMOs I know about, but it was outright horrible in FF11.

At least in World of Warcraft, you can do quests where there's a plot reason for you to kill 12 ogres or find 5 buzzard wings. In FF11, you'd just wait around an hour to find a pickup group that would go into some jungle and fight six-on-one fights against tiny little plant guys that could wipe out your party. Over and over again, for no reason other than to level up so you can kill boring but overly dangerous monsters in the next area.

I'd love to see an actual Final Fantasy MMO that had the depth of plot and ease of gameplay of most of the non-MMO games, but FF11 was a huge disappointment and given how little Square-Enix seemed to care about the many complaints, I'm not really optimistic. But if there's some article somewhere where they acknowledge that a lot of people disliked FF11 and want to reach out to us, I'm more than willing to read it.

I've seen a short combat video. It looked lifeless and dull. Waiting for more info, but not exactly excited.

Nowhere. Now here.
I've seen some combat footage. Looks like Square left for an extra long lunch and left Tri-Ace in charge. I'm shocked that they're this close to launch and combat looks about as much fun as watching grass grow. :(

Played open beta for three days. Uninstalled.

Graphics, music, and combat system are an improvement over FFXI.

Everything else is a step back.

Is there any evidence to support this isn't FFXI with better graphics?

Don't get me wrong, I played a lot of FFXI and enjoyed it most of the time but the game became a grind and frankly... I don't want to travel all the way to the Dunes just to get past Level 12 anymore! I'm usually a mage and I die A LOT.

Everything I've seen hasn't really convinced me, but these are the graphics I was hoping FFXI would have. I just hope the game itself improves somehow.

In North America, one dollar will equal 100 Crysta. Players will be able to buy Crysta in $5, $10, $20, $30, $50 and $100 blocks using their credit card or prepaid cards purchased wherever such things are sold.
Sounds like a micro-transaction to me.
Even if it is bundled with the subscription for the game.

It's only a micro transaction if you can use that to buy in-game items, but the article only mentions subscriptions. It also mentions that the system was implemented specifically so that actual credit card handling is being done by paypal or similar companies, not by Squeenix, to prevent credit card info from being stolen, which has happened with playonline before.
So, i see nothing in the article that suggest the system will be used for actual microtransactions. Doesn't mean there won't be any. If there are, i'd be interested in seeing how tey'll be implemented, because gilsellers were one of the major factors that ruined the FFXI economy. (though lack of adequate gil sinks was a bigger influence)
