Ugh! I definitely sympathize. It sounds like she is either really disorganized or disrespectful. I would move on to other prospects, but keep yourself open in case she calls. She could be having a really tough week. In that case, she'll call when she can. Or she could just be someone you really don't want to work for anyway. Good luck.

It's a good family to work for if only because it puts you in the way of other very well-off families and that might be worth even more than having a boss that pays on time

I agree. She could be dealing with wrapping up year-end tasks at work and planning holiday stuff as well.
Or,
She could be a bubble-brained, inconsiderate person who doesn't follow up on commitments.

Well, I got an e-mail from her this morning. She apologized for not calling back, and then went on to say she has officially secured a nanny, but will keep me in mind in case things don't work out.

Well ... I diligently check my "nanny job web sites" (all 5 of them) every day. And you'll never guess what I found today!
This same lady went and reposted the exact same nanny job add!
Yep! She is STILL in search of a nanny!
So .... I replied.
And then she got back to me tody asking for me to come in and interview with her.

UPDATE
I couldn't get together with her last week so she sent me an e-mail yesterday asking me to please call her today at 11:30 AM to do a phone interveiw.
I did.
I got her voice mail!
I left a polite message apologizing for having missed her and invited her to call me back today at her convenience.
She called back half an hour later and after ten whole minutes she finally said "Okay, I'd like to meet you in person. I'll call you again this week after I know what my schedule will be like and we'll set up a face-to-face."
*sigh*
