I wanted to like "The Last Herald-Mage" trilogy by Mercedes Lackey, but Vanyel is too whiny and does little or no actual demonslaying in the books despite this being the thing he is famous for amongst the general population.

So, yeah - would love to re-write that one, giving the MC a backbone and adding some kick-ass demon slayage

Oh, and dropping the gang-rape incident towards the end of the final book. It seemed to me a cheap, melodramatic way to force the MC into an apotheosis. The 'big showdown" with the villain afterwards fell totally flat because of it, at least for me.
