It probably just doesn't have the money. According to Deadline, MGM has been able to meet its rights payment obligations for the The Hobbit but that's just about it. Warner ultimately has the greenlight but may not want to front the production costs alone or may be waiting to see if it can buy out MGM.

Out side the beltway...
It now seems the Hobbit could be filmed in eastern Europe due to labor trouble in New Zealand according to Peter Jackson. Even sir Ian McKellen has threaten to walk away. Another Gandalf is not going to work at this time...

I think the thing is, everyone has gotten greedy with this project because the first three made so much money. I am all for the studio’s and such making money, but lets get the damn show on the road. Its been what, five years now?

Now I only hope it doesn't take three years to make the darn films!

And we should do a contest. How many times will Ruth see the two Hobbit films (if they do end up making two, which I believe is the plan) in theatres before they end up on DVD? :D

My LotR viewings in theatres for the three films are 19, 17 and 21 respectively, btw.

If you're in Portland we should see it together, along with baby Arwen!

Wasn't sure what you meant by baby Arwen, but we named one of our twin daughters (now 4.5 years old) Arwen. Her sister is named Lorien :) (with the accent over the o.)

yeah, we're fans. can't wait for this movie to come out. very exciting news.

Between there and there
Elijah Wood is confirmed as appearing.
It's a bit odd, but it's possible and he's been asked already (and agreed).
I'm confused, is Jackson heading this thing or not?
It's also going to be in two-parts. That'll make 5 LOTR films in total.

Now the challenge will be to prevent some film producer from trying to make a movie (series) out of the Silmarillion.

Jackson's directing and producing. Elijah Wood's appearances (one in the first film, one in the second) are supposed to be, from what I understand, a sort of narrative framing device. He's not on the adventures with Bilbo.

Jackson is supposedly in talks with Orlando Bloom to appear, too.

Yay! I wish I could be a member of the team making the film. It seems so fun.

It does, doesn't it? On the other hand, writing looks like fun to non-writers. I bet it's going to be a lot of long, careful, tedious work to make that puppy.:)

Should be fun to watch when done, though.

I really hope they do a good job. My mother read The Hobbit to me as a child and I loved it.

Fingers crossed.
But it should be good... LoTR was good, with the main problem I found being that they tried to fit too much into it (the very long ending comes to mind) in order to remain true to the books....
The Hobbit seems like it would fit into film format much more cleanly.

I'm hoping they make a call for extras with parameters I might fit into. That would be awesome.

Watching that made me want to go back and watch the movies again. Something I haven't done since the extended editions came out on DVD.

I forget how much affection I had for those films when they were coming out. These days, when I think of Middle-earth, I think of the books.
