Chapter Consistency

I divided my book based on different months of the school year rather than numbered chapter breaks, and that's led to some pretty lengthy chapters - an average of 20 pages, though they can be all over the map.

For the story I'm planning out now, though, I'm aiming for shorter chapters. Like others have said, it should reflect the story you're trying to tell. When I read, I don't usually stop based on chapter breaks anyway, so chapter length was never something I worried about too much.

I think if you feel your chapters are breaking naturally that's the key. I personally like relative consistency in chapter length as a reader, though I think the pacing is more important than chapter length. A few really short chapters thrown in are effective sometimes, I think.

I also tend to write 2,000-2,500 words per chapter, with smaller chapters in my MG WIP. When my chapter runs short or long, it's generally a sign to me that it needs some extra TLC because something went wrong in the writing.
