Is this a catchy title?

I like what you were saying about the Forbidding Mourning poem (one of my favorites actually. I'm 16, that's not sad....); If We Tell would definitely catch my attention, and I think, from what I've heard about your novel on this thread, it would fit better than The Bright Forever. Then again, take this with a grain of salt because obviously I haven't read your novel.

Gosh... I would totally pick up a book in the YA section called A PIECE OF THE CONTINENT. Sounds thoughtful and intriguing to me. I'll pass on THE BRIGHT FOREVER. The "bright" bothers me.

EDIT: I disagree with IF WE TELL as well. It sounds completely generic.

I didn't mind The Bright Forever... but it does hint at romance, and also fantasy

How about making it more personal?

My Piece of the Continent

A Piece of My Island

A Piece of My Island

You can have a piece of my island anytime, baby ;)

... sorry, couldn't resist >.> I like Tell Them You Love Me... mostly cause Valediction is my favorite John Donne too :D but maybe if you could think of a less obscure word for Laity... though, dunno, that line is so perfect, would be hard to change.... Maybe the last line of that poem, altered a little? End Where I Began? Hmm...

The 'A Piece of the Continent' is a little... non-fiction sounding. I'm just going to mind map a couple of ideas below (probably very poor attempts - I apologise in advance!).

'Pieces'
'The Continent'
'The Bright Continent'
'The Continent of Forever'
'A Piece of Forever'

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

Last night, just as I was falling asleep, I thought of the title COMPASS AND CROWN. If you know "A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning," you know the metaphor about the compass (the drawing instrument). It's a big thing in the book, the characters having to be separated a lot. And the "crown" part, well, one character is the King.

I like it a lot. What do you guys think?

Compass and Crown would make me think it were a historical about the British navy. Or a fantasy adventure about a navy. But definitely boats in a world at the height of sea exploration.

Which probably isn't what you want to hear. :Ssh:

Compass and Crown...I like the image, but something about it is a little off, like it's missing a word.

See, this is why forums are so great. It's all about perspective. I would have totally missed that and made myself the laughingstock of the agenting world :D

From that one I might go with TWIN COMPASSES although that sounds more like they're brothers and... they ain't...

(haha. stiff twin compasses.)

That would be a confusing title because the main character is a twin XD

Gah, maybe I should just call it THE NOVEL THAT REFUSES TO BE TITLED. That's original, right? Right?

I'll probably just keep THE BRIGHT FOREVER and when I'm agented I'll beg them to come up with something better. Haha.

The Bright Forever

Just as a point of information, The Bright Forever was published just a few years ago to strong reviews by a fine writer, Lee Martin. It's a well crafted literary novel and I would recommend it to discerning readers. It revolves around the disappearance of a young girl in a small town and its impact on people in her life -- some of whom are suspects.

I like 'The Bright Forever' myself; it reminds me of old sci-fi. I have a totally unoriginal suggestion for a new name, 'Forever Bright'. It doesn't like a particular genre to me, and... well. I used the same words?

Dang. I think I could still use it though, seeing as they're in pretty different genres, but it's something to think about for sure.

I was going to say I love THE BRIGHT FOREVER...until I read there was another recently published book with that title (though not YA).

Ugh, titles are sooo hard. I hated the one I had, so it was fine when my publisher changed it.

Oh God dang it, so that's why I was able to come up with a good title. Curses. :Headbang:
