OK I tried interpreting an AWers Japanese signature (mix of hiragana and kenji, naturally) into a readable (for me) phonetics, and then checked my work on http://nihongo.j-talk.com/kanji/
How is it possible to get every single one of the characters wrong? How?! (OK the kenji characters were all wrong...I got about half of the hiragana characters right.

Yeah, I've discovered that a lot of what didn't make sense to me when I first started learning was usually very slang-tastic. I'm guessing that it's something similar. Then again, it could just be someone writing something and having no idea what they're saying.

I've noticed the same thing. Some of the slang stuff really throws me. I'm glad I have a school full of teenagers to ask. Then there is the not-as-good-at-Japanese-as-I-thought-Japanese phrasing. (I am victim of this myself alot )

It took me forever to get good at the casual stuff. Now I can do it as well as any random 15-year-old boy. The funny thing is a lot of it is hard to explain in English. I might understand it perfectly, but trying to tell someone what it means? Not nearly as easy lol.
I'm also jealous. I miss Japan. Go eat some really great ramen for me, k?

Does anyone have any free programs they suggest? Right now, I'm using Byki Language Program. Is that a good one?

To learn Japanese? I've never used a program so I can't say, but I have heard good things about Rosetta. Those are several hundred dollars, though.
If you're interested in self-study, I'd recommend buying a textbook (there are a few I could recommend depending on your area of interest) that has a workbook and also a CD to do listening exercises. That won't do you much good in terms of getting speaking practice, and that's really something you'd need one-on-one work to get good at, but it would give you a good idea of basic grammar and vocabulary.
Are you near a university? Something you could consider as well is looking for a language partner, and it might be that you can find a Japanese student who could either do conversation practice with you for a fee or who might be willing to exchange language practice.
There are also tutoring services out there that can arrange services. I'm doing some work with one right now, though I can't say what I think of it quite yet. However hopefully the student I'm working with feels it's worth her while.

I have never used a program either, so wouldn't even want to speculate. Like Katie I have heard of Rosetta. It's been around for a while at least, so it has that going for it.
I too would also recommend your local college/university. I'd suggest going to their international office. The office that works with their international students. Explain what you want and they may be able to put you in touch with a student who would be interested.
Just try not to look like a psycho flake who is into manga and girls. They'll shut you down quick if you do. I'm not assuming you fall into either of those categories though.

私は折節に4年も日本語を勉強しているんですが、能力が下手からなかなか進まないのですよ。残念ね。

じゃ，頑張ってください。僕はもうすぐ１５年間に日本にいることになるます。日本語はまだまだ足りないところがありますけど。日常会話がだいたい大丈夫です。日本語は簡単なところも難しいところもありますがいっぱい練習すればいいんじゃないかなと思います。

日本語が難しいですよ。 外国語を学ぶことも大変です。 実は、みなさんが ときどき停滞期に入ります。それが普通のことですよ。
私は、新しい方法で勉強しました。たとえば、最初に授業で勉強しました。それからまんがを日本語で読みました。大変難しかったんですが、よく覚えました。そして、まんがができそうになったので、諸説を読み始めました。
なんかチャレンジをやったほうがいいと思います。 もちろん頑張ってくださいね。少しずつで上手になりますよ。

皆が言う事は正しい; 毎日の練習は不可欠です。
今には、私と一緒に練習する人もないし、滅多に映画を見たり、音楽を聞いたり、本を読んだりなんかしない。 過去には、しばしばあのようなことをしました。
それにしても、自分の能力に自信がない。練習する機会がある場合であっても、進歩に非常に遅くなってしまったの。それにもかかわらず、是非頑張るよ !
