One Wish

If you had one wish for a piece of kit that you feel would improve your writing, that could be real or imaginary, what would people ask for?

I'd definitely go for one of those memory wipe devices they have on Men In Black. I'm a heavy editor and re-writer, so it's tough for me to go back and read something I've written as if I'm approaching it for the first time. It would be invaluable if I could just finish something, have a flash of the good stuff then go back and read it again with fresh eyes.

I'll take the Imperius Curse.

I finish book. I pick the publisher I want for it. I call the publisher, Imperio my way to the head honcho, and say, "Imperio, publish this MS for a million dollar advance, then throw all your weight behind it. K, thanks!"

Failing that, I'll take a super-comfy, super-ergonomic desk chair custom-designed for me.

I'm 46. I wish I could get another 20 years tacked on to my life so I'd have more time to read everything I want to read and write all things I want to write and still have time for everything else because I keep feeling I'm running out of time, given the current projected life span. I need another 100 years or so - or another life to read and write everything.

I'm 41. I have a degree in Creative Writing that I wasted by working in banking from the time I graduated from college in 1992 until just a few years ago. I did a little bit of collaborative writing about ten years ago but then fell out of practice again.

I want a time machine so I can go back to 1992 and actively work on my craft (even if it means doing it in my spare time while I'm also working). I really hate myself on a daily basis because I can see that the skills that I know I used to have have completely deteriorated from disuse. I feel like I've wasted half my life.

I would love a memory wipe. But what I most need is uninterrupted time.

I'd take invisibility, so I could eavesdrop and people-watch as much as I want! That or a time-machine... I write stuff set in the past a lot and I'd looooove the ability to go and observe for myself rather than rely on the observations of others.

A time machine. To bring me back the 20 years I've partially wasted watching a bit too much recreational TV (more so when I was younger) and playing a bit too many mindless video games and having silly fears.

Hopefully somebody who is 1 will read this and it will ring true to them to stay their course. 21 comes sooner than you think.

Something that could take your thoughts and transfer them directly into the document on the computer without all that manual typing and stuff. You'd have sort of a conversation with the document in your mind, adding new stuff, revising it, moving chunks around or deleting them just by thinking about it. No hands, no talking, just thinking. But it would be intelligent enough to catch specific, directed thoughts rather than every random thought you had.

And every six hours or so, as a background task, it would order fresh pizza delivered to your door, along with a couple of bottles of Pete's Wicked Ale.

While you're scoffing the pizza and supping the ale it would read the text back to you.

Shit, any ideas I have pale in comparison to all of these.

I will take RobJ's thought recording machine, the time-stopping machine, and ABSOLUTELY the memory-wiper! *bites nails* If I had to pick just one? Probably the time-stopper. I'd get SO much more done if I had more hours in a day.

I want a super speshul magic wand that will edit and create queries with a wave.

Barring that, I would like the ever popular time machine so I could actually go to college for creative writing before I became bitter and jaded.

Barring that, I want a money tree that only grows 100 bills that ripen and fall off daily. Working has really kept me from having writing time.
