I will admit the chestnuts were of the frozen variety, that you just pop in the oven with salt over them. They're still yummy, though.

I've never had a chestnut...

I'm hungry, too. And much too tired to go fix something. I may starve to death.

Finished the weedeating of the south property line and fence. In 2 hours.

Am tired.

So instead of writing, I'm watching Drag Me to Hell.

I remember parts of that...it's been a while since I watched it, I think that I was unimpressed, but usually am with horror shows.

*sigh* it's stupid.

It seems to have been made on the mistaken premise that if something is gross, it's scary/has a horror quality.

I couldn't finish it.

Drag Me To Hell has one of the single dumbest scenes in the history of US film. It made the vein in my forehead pound like a jackhammer when I realized they weren't joking. Such a waste of potential.

That's a pretty high bar, you know, given some of the stupidity that has been committed in the name of American Cinema.

Jaws 4 alone would necessitate a trebuchet to get over....

Jaws 4? You got to Jaws 4 before you go to Battlefield: Earth?

And I gotta point out how much the lead actress in Drag Me To Hell reminded me of Melissa George in some scenes. Of course, without the acting range (or, really, any nuance to her performance) so it automatically made me a bit wary - the sacrifice scene is, however, so stupid it ought to be shown in film classes to demonstrate how a suspenseful scene can turn into a comedy classic moment if the director is asleep while the scene is being filmed.

Well, curse-shark beats pale Klingon knock-offs, in my book.

That and Michael Caine has publicly admitted he was in it solely for the paycheck (to the extent that he has never seen the completed film, but has seen the nice house it built), whereas I don't think Travolta ever apologized.

Also because even 13 year old me knew they had so, so, soooo much wrong.

I've forgiven Michael Caine films for much, much worse - The Swarm, despite being the most redundant, ill-conceived piece of scare-mongering, horrific trash, is (somehow) massively entertaining. There are some films where I know, even as I am watching them, that I should be openly mocking the actors, but he makes me feel like a little kid sitting in front of the television at 3am again. I don't know why, but he's one actor I could watch in anything without feeling the urge to complain...

Agreed.

And he's made some poor, poor choices.

Also, for me, Ron Perlman and Sam Neil. Usually. Omen 3 remains a toss-up.

Christ, this is gonna be so, so geeky... (as if that has ever stopped me before)

Bruce Campbell can do no wrong. If he wants to remake Zardoz I'd even watch that. He's earned the right to do anything he damn well wants and not care, because he is awesome. Ron Perlman, for Beauty And The Beast and Hellboy, is there, and Brad Dourif for... Well, everything, really - even in shitty films, which he has no right to be watchable in, he somehow raises the bar for those scenes he is in. There's an honesty there that makes even the dumbest dialogue work.

I... I dunno man. That's a tough call. I'm not sure I've forgiven Connery for that one yet.

Esp that over-the-shoulder mankini thing...

*shudders*

I wasn't even thinking it might be stupid when I started it. But the fight scene with with the gypsy in the car went from ooo... to wth... and I wondered.

Then the scene with the sacrifice, yes absolutely - a prime example of what not to do. And I started to think about all the things I could be doing instead that would be a better use of my time. Including cleaning the guinea pig cage.

The one that sealed it's early ejection from the DVD player though was the fight scene when the gypsy stuck her arm up to the elbow into the girl's mouth, followed by the girl cutting a rope with a pair of old ice skates, bringing down on the gypsy's head something so heavy her eyeball shot out her her head and into the girl's mouth.

:

The thing had such potential and instead they shot it full of stupid scenes that one would expect from a parody.

Connery is still in 'borderline' territory for LXG. I'm harsher on him because he doesn't even pretend to be acting - he simply turns up and plays himself. The perfect storm of a heist plot, scenery porn, Catherine Zeta Jones and Connery makes Entrapment complete crap, though The Rock is highly, highly entertaining... Even if it is nonsense.

Actually...

It was silly, yes, but... there was the training montage that, as far as I was concerned, redeemed it. Juvenile of me, but worth it.

LXG is another thing entirely.... though I would have watched Connery play an aging Quartermain in another vehicle, I think. (Now there's a literary... er, story ... franchise that despite it's potential has never been done much justice on film.)

I have also decided that at this point Bruce Campbell has gotten a tad too old for the Zardoz outfit. Really. There's a reason he wears loose shirts in Burn Notice.

I was about to say, I was half-convinced Raimi intended it as something of a parody...

I mean, it is Sam Raimi, after all.
