B&B or B and B In Dialogue

Gulp. That's a tricky one. I am not normally a fan of capitalising something that isn't a proper noun (a place or a name). But in this instance, lower case "bed and breakfast" looks awkward. You can run into usage problems if people read "bed" as being separate from "and breakfast".

I googled it for you. There seems to be little consistency. Wikipedia uses lower case, the "Bed and Breakfast and UK Hotels Guide" uses capitals. Individual establishments use a mixture. The trade also seems quite happy with "B&B" rather than B and B.

It probably comes down to personal tastes, but I would lean towards "Bed and Breakfast" in main text and "B&B" in dialogue.

I don't expect that we will get consensus on this one!

The ampersand doesn't make much sense to me in dialogue because it's a symbol, not a different word. It's visual, not aural. The characters are going to hear the same thing as part of the dialogue no matter which way you do it.

Of course, that's what my logic says and usage may not care about my logic.

What do you think about: "I decided to put the money towards a bed-and-breakfast in Bali." or "It's Bali's first hosted b-and-b."?
