Do me a favor?

I don't have a mobile phone at hand but I took a look in my browser and I have a few thoughts. First, this is what it looks like in my firefox - link to image of website.
There are a few simple things that would improve the look.
1. Centering the links under your picture.
2. Right now, everything is very linear and top to bottom. Having a sidebar with the links in it will give it a cleaner look.

Have you thought about using a Content Management System like Wordpress. The installation is the only hard part (and that is pretty straightforward) and once it is done you can easily use one of the free themes to create very professional looking webpages, or pay anywhere from $40 to $120 to get custom themes made by designers. With wordpress, you worry about the content and not about the design of the site itself. Here are some examples of what an author website could look with Wordpress. BTW, I'm not affiliated with Wordpress. I just use it a lot.

I will add that some of the pages are hard to read because of the strong, colorful background images, especially the Short stories section was hard to read.

I like the idea of keeping it simple and the basic idea of the website. I like simple websites myself. They are easy to browse and it's easy to find what you're looking for. In fact keeping it simple has been my design philosophy on the few websites I've designed. I would suggest making your website a little more modern looking, however. It looks a little outdated, because of the font and the background images. The different background images also make it look a little inconsistent.

I'm a big fan of WordPress too. I find that it is the most user friendly for both the website owner and the visitor. I like the site's concept, but the contrast between the letters and the background was tough on my eyes in some places. Perhaps I am just getting old.

Hey, jesey. I had a look at this on my phone but had to shut it--the dark background is a migraine magnet for me. I was able to look at a page or two and they looked okay (though I'd make the text one consistent color), it was the background that was too much for me.

I liked the granite(?) rocks--very NH, but had the same problem with the photo backgrounds being too distracting. In a program I have for designing web pages, you can make a photo into a "watermark," fading it out quite a bit, and sometimes that looks good, especially with an image like the rocks which has variations on a single tone and something of a geometry to it. You could try that, but I'm not promising anything. It took awhile for my first couple web page designs to come together and look good. Experiment, and keep at it.

You can still have a background image. As lorna_w suggested, you can make it into a watermark. You could also choose a light color. Or you could have an image that goes along one side of the page or across the top of the page. There are quite a few options there. If you are working on your own website, you could check out W3 Schools. They have lots of useful guides, tips and other information on designing a website.

It looks like perhaps you've made some of those changes.

Sure, there are lots of fancy, interactive, super-author sites out there, but your site provides everything that I look for when I research an author and it's easy to read.

I like the general page design, but I don't like the video. There is too much background noise, and it makes it hard to tell what you and the interviewer are saying. Kind of signals home amateur video. You need individual lapel mics for that kind of interview, and few consumer camcorders have inputs for them. Best to go into a quiet room.
