Tepelus, I love the hair colour.

SK, I think we need some video of you taking these photos. Perhaps with the Mission Impossible music playing in the background.

I've been pining for an 80-400mm lens, which I could handle without a tripod; but so far my pleading has fallen on deaf ears...

The video would have to be heavily edited to remove the scenes where I'm fumbling and bumbling about and cursing the shots I missed, which occurs about ninety percent of the time.

It's funny you should mention a hat with a fish holder, as I've been working on altering a wide-brimmed safari hat with two clips to hold the bait in place. The design, if it works, would allow the fish to be released with minimal contact from the bird while a chin strap would keep the hat secured to my head.

The most difficult aspect of the project, for now, is to keep it hidden from my wife.

It's a young female, not quite to adulthood yet but close. Younger pelicans are mostly white with pale colored beaks. I'll post an image of one next to an adult, where the color difference between the two is striking.

Thank you. I'm always surprised, always, when action shots turn out well. I usually expect the worst, with good reason, so it's nice to see that once in a while, the effort pays off.

I've thought of doing so as a gift to family members. But I'd drive myself mad trying to select the dozen shots it would take to make up a calendar. I can't even make up my mind most of the time which pics to post here...

Break them up by species. 12 gators one year, 12 herons the next, 12 ospreys the third.
Heck, you've probably got enough for one of those 'photo a day' calendar blocks.

If the safari hat doesn't work out for you, try to get your hands on a construction safety helmet, or a bike helmet. Nice and solid, you could drill into it and bolt the fish-holder mount right to the top. If the mount was bolted securely, and connected to the fish-holder by something fairly delicate, like a stick of pine or balsa, the osprey could easily snap it and fly away. And, you could get another stick, re-attach the fish-holder and a new fish, and be ready for the osprey's next pass.

So a week or so ago we went to an art fair. There's a guy who does photography, both above and below water. He's amazing. We bought a canvass print of a turtle he says is a regular friend of his (below--it's not great quality, shot with an iPhone, but the canvass itself is breathtaking).

But SK, your stuff seriously is up there with his--and he's a pro with many years of experience. I was thinking you could totally have a booth next to him and blow him away.

(picture removed)

ETA: Hm. Very grainy. Ah well. It's a gorgeous picture.

ETA 2: Mm. Maybe not such a good idea to post someone else's work without their permission.

I do, actually: enough to fill several years' worth!

That's a beautiful picture. Do you know if he sells prints? I'd like to buy one and frame it for my daughter, who is wild about sea turtles.

I don't know why, exactly, but I'd feel strange selling my images. There's no rhyme or reason for the way I feel, just a general sense of unease by the thought of profiting from what essentially is merely a hobby.

I enjoy sharing the pictures with others though, especially in this thread.

I read a news story recently about a knucklehead man who had the misfortune to find out the hard way why it's not a good idea to hand-feed alligators.

Too bad the animal lost its life due to the encounter. As for the other victim, he still has one more chance to make the same mistake again.
