I dunno, I think that Shepard at least is made or broken by the voice actor...and...well, Jennifer Hale can out act the cardboard box they had voicing male Shepard with two hands tied behind her back.

That might be a thing. I never got to play the game with sound more than once or twice.

I think that's the reason why most people prefer female Shepard. Her va is simply a lot better.

FF12 was the first FF game since 7 that I really liked. My conclusion over the years is that there are roughly five people in the world who are in that group.

Anyway, I really liked Chell, which I attribute more to loving the rest of Portal than anything else, since she had no personality to speak of (note that I've only played the first Portal).

Other than that, FF7's Tifa Lockheart has always been a favorite.

Honestly, I've never been a big fan of Jennifer Hale's voice work as FemShep, though I do like the character. She just sounds like she's trying too hard to sound tough by graveling her voice to an absurd level, which comes across as stereotypically butch and therefore fake. I hear it a little bit also when she's voicing Ms. Marvel in "Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes."

Mark Meer's male Shep isn't horrible but he does deliver too many lines flat. I think it's partly the voice director's (Caroline Livingstone) fault and partly the fact that he's mainly an improv comedy actor and doesnt have anything close to the VA experience of Hale.

His volus and Vorcha voices are pretty good, though.

I though Jennifer Hale was pretty good as the female Shepard. As for the male Shepard... I could never play as one because the voice acting was so dreadful. The "Big... Stupid.. Jellyfish." line was pretty funny if you were playing male, though.

I don't know if anyone has played Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean, but Xelha is a pretty strong character. The entire game's va borders on terrible and hers is no exception, but even though she seems annoying at first, she gets dealt a pretty awful hand and sticks with it until the end. Not to mention at one point in the game, she's alone and manages to overcome her obstacles all by herself.

Does the villain from Code: Veronica count as male or female? Awesome character.

MoLoLu has a spectacular aura
Jaina Proudmoore (is that spelled correctly?)

Compared to the would-be king who ruined lordaron, she did a pretty good job uniting all the races under a common banner for a common goal. Excellent character.

Two pages and no-one's mentioned Alyx Vance? Tsk tsk.

Someone mentioned Jaheira, I also seem to remember liking Imoen. Slightly over-bubbly and annoying in the first game, but I remember liking her better in the second.

I don't know how many people have played/heard of Tales of Symphonia, but my vote goes to Raine Sage (Refill Sage in the Japanese version). A schoolteacher who can't cook to save her life, is dressed in long scholarly robes that don't make her look like a piece of meat, and will beat the younger characters upside the head if they're getting a little too crazy. And her 'ruin mode' is hilarious.

Yes, those two were awesome characters. Nel in particular was really cool.

For Tales of Symphonia, my favorite female character was Sheena. Actually, she was my favorite character in the entire game.

I'd forgotten about Star Ocean - I loved Nel! I also loved KOS-MOS from Xenosaga if she counts. Since, you know, she isn't technically female since she's technically a robot. XD

Rosella from the King's Quest games (old PC games) - as I said before I think she was the first playable female character for a PC video game. and she was awesome. Specifically I'm thinking KQ IV

Tanya(?) from the command and conquer games. whichever one she appeared in. Maybe she doesn't count.. but I thought she was awesome back in the day.

Kairi from Kingdom hearts

princess peach

hmm.. can't think of any more

Tanya definitely counts. She actually got a lot of cool scenes in Red Alert 2 and was a one woman army. Plus that ending scene where you invites to be her date to the victory party.

Sheena is one of my favorites too! Her 'relationship' with Zelos made for the best comedy relief in the story. I was tempted to cosplay as her last year, but well...the cleavage...yeah.

So I'm Alice the sadist from ToS2 instead. Fun fun.
