Agent emailed a bit ago - said she's gotten a really positive response from her pitches so far. One thing I thought was interesting was she mentioned the editors being excited about the 'personal connection' I had with the story. [much of it deals with international adoption - it's an idea I got after reading a newsletter from our agency about girls from Moldova and Romania who had 'aged out' of the system]
Anyhow, possibly a take-home message for those crafting the bio section of their queries. (i.e. it isn't so much 'write what you know' as it is 'write something you have to write')And now, where's Blonde's puking smiley when I need it?

Rab, GOOD LUCK! The last time I went blonde it did not go well. Red is my color. But, I think blonde would look great on you!

Rab, I think blonde hair would look fantastic on you. But if you've never done it, here's my caveat. It takes for freaking EVER and it can cost a bundle.
Altho, I'm in NY, so everything costs millions and millions of wampum here. But even if it had been cheaper, I just got tired of spending so much time in the salon (and this was back before I had kids, so I actually HAD time.) |

Thanks, Kris - and yeah, it's a pain in more ways than one. I used to do it myself back in my poor student days. Salon prices are ridiculous (though not as bad as NY) If I do it, I'll only keep it up for the summer and then I'll probably switch back.

From your pic, I'd think blonde would look fantastic with your coloring. Actually, I think my blonde fling was sort of a summer thing too. Then in fall the days got shorter and suddenly I was like "oh god I'm wasting my youth in this damn salon chair!!!"
I love talking about hair. I finally grew mine out pretty long, and I'm digging it.

So, as I'm writing the last bit of this book and an awesome new character showed up who basically makes me think lots of idle sequel thoughts. Anyway, this and a beta I've recently finished for my writing prof, lead me to a PURGY POLL: Who are your favorite kinds of supporting characters? What makes them memorable and maybe prompts you to root more for them than even a book's protagonist?
Discuss. ![]() ETA: Hair. I have dye sitting on my dresser. Alas, not until this chapter bites the dust. Until then, I shall avoid mirrors and ignore my glaring roots.

Having seen your pic on FB, it looks awesome the way you have it now
![]() eta: Dys, this is a bit of a generic answer, but things like sense of humor and unfulfilled, but lurking potential. A sense of destiny. Or it could be a character who lost out to a romantic lead for someone's affections, etc.

I can't do the spinny, sadly. I figured that out in college, actually, when me and a bunch of friends wandered off to a local playground at 2 am and I decided the merry-go-round was OMGBESTTHINGEVAR.
Yeah, not so much. The fact that I'd been drinking probably really didn't help, but I've attempted to repeat the experience sober recently, and it still makes me feel like somebody batted my brains like a pinata. Duuuuuuuuuuuuuude. ![]() Quote:
Becky, awesome!! Fingers and toes crossed!!! I think you'd look great blond. And hell, I still do it myself, though I'm ash already, so I stick to near-white highlights and a red starburst. I got tired of the cost and time of professional coloring. |

I have it too. Deadlines on the 25th, the 1st, the 16th. *crying* But I'm still going to do your poll *wipes tears*... Call me silly but Spock was a great supporting character. I liked when you would sense his grudging admiration for the Cap'n. Even as a kid that came through to me. And because of his intelligence/ logicalness, you gave it some credence- it made him a nice foil for the hero. If the supporting character is an idiot, ya know, who cares if they think the MC is way cool? Conversely, another fave supporting character of mine is Bigwig from W@tership Down. He was repeatedly described as being not too bright, but strong and resourceful. He had enjoyed a position of privilege in the old warren, so he didn't really need to travel cross country with Captain Kirk...I mean Hazel. (sometime I want to write an essay on the parallels btw WD and ST ) SO again, it makes a nice foil for the-- not necessarily strong or tough, but intelligent Main Character Rabbit. If the toughest toughie in Rabbitdom is following him, he must have a lot going for him.I thought of another one while typing that, but now it escapes me! If it comes back to me, I"ll post it. Another fave trick of mine is when the hero is really a sidekick, like in K1dnapped by Robt L0uis St3venson. |

Starting to address the comments from my awesome betas.
The running theme — MC is shitty dog owner. Must fix this. Among some other things.I wrote an article this morning about the nicest little old man who SP’d a memoir, which I think is lovely, but Jesus. It didn’t even make sense. Timeline hopping abounds, and misspellings and poor sentence structure ... it made me slightly nuts trying to follow it. But I finally turned it in. Woohoo. Dys: Being likeable and funny, and a good friend. Silly, but true for me. Becky — FUN! I’d love to change mine, but I’m a chicken. I can totally see you as a blonde. And vamp dust for editor love. More vamp dust for Vandal! Blondie, can I have one of those espressos? Sunna, love the coaster. I’ve been on that very one this week. Jenn!! *waves* |

It's funny. I'm really enjoying all the time JL and I are spending together. Like since I got back from the travels, every night. I may or may not have had to clean out a second drawer for him. But that only child part of me misses some of the alone time! Last night he wasn't going to get home until after 10pm and I actually blew off a social event (I know, right? WHO AM I???) to stay home and catch up on my TiVo guilty pleasures alone. It was awesome. I should have been working on the new proposal which I kinda promised to Rockstar by Monday. Why do I do these things to myself? |
