I had to fiddle around in ASIO4ALL while my DAW and emulation programs/plugins ran, because modifying settings in ASIO4ALL only works for the program you are currently using)

I also would suggest you plug the link DIRECTLY into the computer (don't use a HUB or USB extension cable, the power loss causes issues.) Also running something inbetween the guitar and link cable to provide a little extra juice to the signal helps. My setup for it goes something like this (Guitar -> Patch Cable -> FX pedal turned off but still plugged in to provide some extra juice -> Guitarlink Cable -> PC

also got to keep in mind it is going to be assigned specifically to that USB port, meaning its only going to work on that one when installed.
Hmm... The one I had, I didn't see any way to NOT use a USB cable - the guitarlink itself had to plug in USB-wise, sort of thing. Or is that not what you meant?

In any event, I returned it a week after buying it, and got a full refund, which was about a year ago, so I can't test it out now.

*shrug*

The last time I recorded guitar, I had my USB mic (quite a decent one, actually) sitting near the amp... Perhaps not the cleanest record, but it got me there.

Yeah, the guitarlink cable itself plugs into a USB port and has a 1/4th in. audio connector at the other end. ASIO4ALL is basically a Driver/Front end that enables ASIO support, and profiles according to which program you use. I had to mess around in that for like 3 minutes to get my cable working. However I had audio cut-offs due to not enough power being supplied for the cable. Hence why I went with the setup I did.

And from what I heard, the version of the cable that comes with the rocksmith game also works for PC.

Micing an amp IS preferable BUT a lot more expensive. And Preferably a good condenser or dynamic mic should be used. (and you would have to use it with a good interface that supports the actual MIC connectors most studio setups use. Hence big pricetag)

Yeah, I've got a condenser mic. Not the most expensive one out there (about $100) and I don't have a proper interface.

Oh, and that Peavey amp I couldn't remember the name of?

Peavey Vypyr Tube 60W.

Not bad, its a good amp from what I have read.

Ill just link to my amp because its a brand that most people don't know (that fails miserably, even for a practice amp.)

Okay, so I put a deposit down yesterday on a new rig.

Here is a video of the amp I'm buying, being played with a guitar with EMG pickups. The guitar I'm buying also uses EMG (not sure if they're the same model) but is a Cort EVL-Z4.

I wanted the K4, but it wasn't in stock, and it's the end of financial year sale down here, so I picked up the Z4 for half price. The only real difference I can tell between the K4 and the Z4 is the shape of the body. Like, where you strap on, the Z4 is a rounded shape, and the K4 is a kind of spiky shape. But they sound the same, which is all that matters.

I'll be picking them up next week sometime. (Together, I got both for less than the guitar costs at full price. )

So I'll be selling my cheapo learning setup in the classifieds to recoup some money.

I have ocarinas. A Focalink double-chambered:

And my prized possession, a Charlie Hind wooden double:

What the heck is an ocarina, you ask? There's information and sound samples on my blog.

(I also have an acoustic guitar, but I only know about four chords. Once my current ocarina obsession has eased, I'll get back into my guitar lessons...)

Y'know, I had never heard an ocarina before now. Sounds interesting.

Right now I'm contemplating getting a cheap violin to play around with. There are some nice-looking ones on Amazon that I have my eye on.

Not that I need more instruments...

Yeah, violins are awesome.

Some of my favourite metal songs have some backing violin in them. That's a big reason why I want to learn.

I'm sure I'd make a big racket on it to begin with, though.

Oh, the organ I'm going to inherit someday is (not sure if I've mentioned this one yet, so here goes) a Gulbransen. I *think* it's the 300 Series... I can't remember, and it's not in this house (yet) for me to check.

Sounds bloody nice though.

I've got...

Yamaha Pacifica 312 in super sexy green (first guitar bought for me)
Yamaha RGX baritone
Jackson KVX10 hardtail
Yamaha acoustic with a retrofitted Fishman pickup
Ibanez SR300 bass
Peavey Bandit 112 amp (first gen)
EMU 1616 audio interface (soon to be replaced)
Blue Sky Exo 2.1 monitors (also planning to replace)
FATAR StudioLogic SL990 keyboard

If anyone wants to talk about home recording, I can blather on for hours.

For the record, my preferred method of recording an acoustic guitar would be to play in a really nice sounding room and record using a matched pair of small diaphragm condensor mics (SDCs) into a quality preamp. Since I lack all three of those things, I make do with my large diaphragm condenser (LDC) into the preamps on my EMU.

That's a bitchin' hoard, onesecond!

And feel free to blather about home recording. One day, when I actually have my own place (seems to be a prerequisite for actually having room to set up all my instruments) I'm planning on spending a LOT of time playing music, just so I can get good enough to record some stuff the way it should be done.

So... blather away!

Oh, oh, is it my turn?

I've got two guitars:

Ovation Celebrity that my dad got me on my sixteenth birthday. I wish it was one of the slim back designs because it's not the easiest thing to play standing up, but other than that, and the high action which is totally fixable but I'm lazy, I love it! It's about ten years old now, and it's served me well. I've done a few shows with it because my other guitar doesn't have a pickup...

Alvarez P90: Alvarez guitars have the most wonderfully warm, full sound. I sort of abused the hell out of mine because I like alternate tunings and was indiscriminate in my earlier experimentation. Now I keep her tuned down to a "standard" B, and took her to a luthier recently to have her set up properly for such a low tuning.

We also have a very, very old upright piano inherited from my husband's grandmother. Neither of us play yet, unless Chopsticks and a choppy version of Fir Elise count, but we're learning!

And the Piece de Resistance is my stand-up bass. Don't ask me what kind, 'cause I have no idea. I've been playing classically for about 15 years, but had to sell my first bass right after high school when I realized I didn't want to study music in college. I was working at a Sam Ash music store a few years ago, and everyone knew I was a bass player without an instrument. So one day, some idiot returned a perfectly good, brand spanking new stand up because the varnish was scratched on the backside. Instead of fixing it and reselling it as used, my managers concocted a silly sales floor competition that only I could win (literally, no one in that building had any chance of beating me!) and then when I inevitably won, they surprised me with the stand-up bass as the prize! Best management team ever, I tell you what.

Those are my babies. My husband is also an audio engineer, and we do a lot of recording around the house. We just moved into our first home, and he's even installing mic panels and running wires around the house to create a home studio. I'd give you more details, but I would just show my ignorance. I just plug and play, he does the technical stuff.

I look forward to the day I get my own studio setup. *dreamy face*

I've been playing my new guitar quite a bit lately, and I'm actually showing improvement. Woo!

KL, that sounds awesome. My "studio" is a spare bedroom, but I have a dream plan to build a purpose-built, fully acoustically treated space over the next few years. I just need to win the lottery so I can afford it

Yeah, I want a custom-made room for recording too.

I was thinking of sound-proofing so I can play whenever I want, though good acoustics would help too.

aibrean is on a distinguished road
Shure KSM27 Mic with pop filter
CEntrance MicPort Pro (USB interface)
An assortment of flutes (2 flutes, tin whistle, wooden flute, and piccolo)
Adobe Audition 2 (should be upgrading to 6 in the next couple of months)

I've been getting into singing for EDM producers lately (plus voice work). The studio setup certainly helps.

That sounds like fun, aibrean. I want to try a flute some day, actually.
