Cases of whooping cough (aka pertussis) at highest levels in 53 years

http://online.wsj.com/article/APae1a...0e3abe635.html

Quote:
CDC: Whooping cough cases may be most in 5 decades

July 19, 2012 -- Associated Press

ATLANTA — Health officials say the nation is on track to have the worst year for whooping cough in more than five decades.

Nearly 18,000 cases have been reported so far — more than twice the number seen at this point last year. At this pace, the number of whooping cough cases will surpass every year since 1959....

Here's a videos of what Whooping Cough sounds like. (Very disturbing.)

I blame the stupid, stupid, STUPID (did I say stupid?) anti-vaccination movement that don't vaccinate their children against it.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/scienceb...tion-movement/
Quote:
It’s not a coincidence that California is the center of the new pertussis epidemic. Vaccination rates among adults in California have been dropping in recent years, large due to the influence of anti-vaccination zealots such as Jenny McCarthy and groups such as Age of Autism. Anti-vaccination sentiments seem to strike a chord with relatively well-educated segments of the population – the same people who favor organic food and want to use “natural” products as much as possible. Anti-vaxers appeal to this group by arguing that vaccines are unnatural, and that the body’s own immune system can be “boosted” by various natural treatments. Appealing though this may sound, it has no basis in science. California makes it easy for parents to claim exemptions from the required vaccinations for their children, and exemptions have more than doubled since 1997, according to the L.A. Times.

I unfortunately have a friend who is against vaccinating her kids, despite my trying to get it through her head all the good they have done.

Unfortunately, even if you did convince some of them that this is their fault, they'll still probably believe it's the lesser of two evils. "Still better than the kid getting autism because of a vaccine," or something along those lines.

Ugh this so much. I don't think kids should be allowed in schools without vaccinations. It's not worth the risk, especially for the younger ones. If you don't want your kids vaccinated, you can home school them.

There are populations of people who truly can't get vaccines. Choosing not to vaccinate a person who's capable of receiving it puts not only the individual at risk, but everyone around them who's vulnerable. And newborn babies are a huge part of that group.

I was a hawk about people coming near my son before his first major round of vaccines at three months. He didn't go to the mall, he didn't visit friends' houses, he didn't even come to church with me. We went on plenty of walks outside, but never with groups of people. If you wanted to touch him, you washed your hands or helped yourself to the giant thing of hand sanitizer we kept close by. Some people started asking me as he neared three months, "But when do we get to see the baby?" I told them exactly when and why. While I did have several people who probably thought I was overdoing it, most were very understanding.

That is so scary. Sounds like the baby can't get enough air. This is life threatening, isn't it?

Thank God for vaccinations. I would lose my sanity listening to my baby going through that.

Sometimes, I think all anti-vaccination parents should be made to sit in a ward full of children suffering with whooping cough, gasping for air. I'm not big on emotional manipulation, but christ almighty, do they fully comprehend the massive risk they're taking?

Which is just bloody baffling to me, because the scant evidence pointing towards a vaccine/autism link has mostly been discredited, whereas the link between measles and ACTUAL BRAIN DAMAGE is well known and well established. If we're talking risks, I'd rather err on the side of NOT sending my kid out open to potentially deadly viruses.

I have respiratory issues, so anytime I have a coughing fit, it sounds like that. People really do find the sound horrifying. It gives my mom so much anxiety even though I've been doing it since I was five.

It stresses my husband out, too. I sometimes clamp down my mouth and just sputter through my lips because I don't want to upset anyone haha

Now I'm trying to decide between going and getting a TdaP booster now, or waiting 'til I get my flu shot in the Fall.

(I've got no insurance, but currently have a temp job, so maybe I could afford it. Even if we don't have universal health care, at least vaccinations should be free. They're probably the most cost-effective preventive medicine ever.)

Ditto for me. And ditto a hundred times to all the complaints against anti-vaccination paranoia. Here it is, coming home to roost. Yeah, anti-vaccine parents, tell me more about how you all plan to ride the coattails of the herd immunity provided by the rest of us. /Bitter resentment of other people's self-indulgent foolishness.

They are probably at a minimal fee at your local health department. That's the cheapest place for vaccinations.

Quote:
Nearly 18,000 cases have been reported so far — more than twice the number seen at this point last year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday. At this pace, the number for the entire year will be the highest since 1959, when 40,000 illnesses were reported.
The dyptheria vaccine came out in the twenties. The population in 59 was a little over half of what it is now. On a percapita basis, the incindence of dyptheria is still far less than what it was in 59. Yes, people need to be more vigilant and educated about vaccinations, but the article seems to be blowing things out of proportion to me.

I am proud to say that I, my kids, and their grandma have all had their vaccines/boosters. (Only the too-small for it baby and my lazy husband are left. But he's gonna get his.)

Really, this business is so stupid.

I mean, there are some valid points within the anti-vax community. Why does a kid need half a dozen vaccines all at the same time? The vax schedule crams a lot of 'em into the first year because often doctor-seeing compliance drops off after that--especially for poor folks. The result is that unbundled vaccines, letting the kids whose parents are willing to make more visits, etc. just aren't really available.

One of my kids couldn't walk for two days after his last round of vaccinations. I really would have preferred to space them out.

But *my* dad had polio. It screwed up his fine motor control for life. Imagine wanting to paint, and not being able to control your hands...
One of my kids is named after a great-great uncle who was rendered infertile by the mumps. Yesterday my MiL was talking about how much pain this caused him. He was a great person despite his troubles, but a mumps-free childhood would have been a good thing.

So my kids get their damn shots.

I had whooping cough once when I was young. It was the most terrifying experience I had ever lived through, a feeling of being constantly just BARELY able to breathe.

This makes me so...fucking...angry.

To register my son for kindergarten, I had to provide a copy of his immunization record. Last year, the state of California started requiring a TB booster for entering middle school/high school students before they'd be allowed to register (because of the rising numbers of TB cases from those who've not been vaccinated).

It's been a few years, but it seems like there was a way to opt out of the vaccine requirement by filling out a form, which is how parents are getting around this. This pisses me off. Sure, put everyone else at risk because you don't believe in science. Now we're finding out what happens when people don't vaccinate their kids.

Scary stuff. I just made an appointment to get my 2 yr. old caught up on his vaccinations, and this epidemic has me tremendously worried, because he's so far behind on his shots.

This is no fault of mine, BTW. He's been at the doc at least once a month for the past 14 months due to chronic ear infections. They won't vaccinate (at least my doc won't) when a child is sick. Three times we've gone in for shots, and he had an ear infection I didn't even know about, so he couldn't get the shots.

Now, I'm very worried that he will be one of those who's health is compromised by those who just chose not to do it. Thank God my daughter is caught up until next year. I'll just have to keep an eye out for my son.

In NJ, you have to be vaccinated against pretty much everything before you can start in the public school system. And before 6th grade, my daughter had to get a meningitis vaccination (I think that's what it was - I took her for it a few weeks ago and the paperwork is downstairs and I don't feel like looking, so we'll just assume that's what it was, kthnxbai.) And she'll have to have another round of boosters sometime around her freshman year (yikes!) of high school.

I'll admit, I don't entirely trust that all those vaccinations are needed (I don't trust pharmaceutical companies as far as I could throw them), but I'd rather err on the side of caution (even if I'm not entirely convinced it is the side of caution.)

If there's one place to trust, it's vaccinations. Insofar as profits go, they're...actually a really shitty scheme. I mean, it's an injection that you take a grand total of ONCE.

If anyone is profiting, it's the refrigeration companies, as I think that accounts for 80% of the costs.

Big Pharma is big for lots of reasons, but vaccines aren't one of them. Neither drug companies nor physicians stand to turn a profit from immunizations.

I never said profit from vaccines had anything to do with not trusting them. I trust my doctors (especially my pediatricians) but pharmaceutical companies? Not a chance.

Human beings have been vaccinating themselves against disease for, oh, at least 250 years now. Why the sudden distrust? Why the lack of historical perspective? The reason we have so few viral outbreaks and epidemics now is thanks to vaccinations. "Big Pharma" did not invent the vaccine, nor its necessity.

Meningitis outbreaks do not occur often. But that is, in part, because meningitis (the type that we vaccinate against) is fucking. deadly. Without medical intervention, death is almost certain. Even with medical intervention, symptoms such as brain damage, deafness, and gangrene can occur. Sepsis. Hemorrhaging of the kidneys. Etc., etc.

Meningitis epidemics happen most often when disparate groups of people are living together for the first time, which is why many schools and universities require inoculation. My sister was living in a college dorm during a meningitis outbreak in 2006 or so. It was identified on a Friday, and by Sunday, one student was dead and another was in critical condition.

ETA: This is a little girl who contracted meningitis. It resulted in her becoming a quadruple-amputee.
