Fire at Chevron refinery in Richmond

here
Quote:
(08-06) 20:45 PDT RICHMOND -- Residents of Richmond, North Richmond and San Pablo were ordered to stay in their homes with the windows and doors closed Monday night after a series of explosions and fires tore through Chevron's Richmond refinery.
The explosions started about 6:15 p.m. and at least two large fires spewed thick, black smoke in the darkening sky.
Fill up while you can.

Some folks I know have debated whether or not it's a good idea to keep gas masks on hand in your house -- just in case.

I used to think keepiing gas masks on had was silly. Now I am rethinking that suggestion.

If you think of it as just another form of fire insurance, what's silly about it?

We have this real tendency to think that rather than protecting ourselves from threats, if we pay somebody money to protect us we'll be safe.

We buy health insurance then eat like pigs, smoke, and screw around without condoms. We buy auto insurance then drive in extreme traffic, on bald tires at 10 over the limit, singing along with the radio and enjoying a Big GulpTM, while texting our BFF. We buy flood insurance and then build whole communities in locations that are guaranteed to flood. We buy home insurance and put cheap locks on the doors or let shrubs grow up in front of the windows, or let the mail collect on the doorstep while we're away.

...and when someone considers buying a gas mask because they live in an area that has the potential to require one, we think it's silly.

Perhaps modern man has reached the end of the evolutionary ladder.

I don't think a gas mask would help in this situation. It might, but gas masks don't protect against everything. In this case, I think a respirator might be what's necessary.

The better solution is to not live anywhere near a refinery.

This is in my area. Most people are self-evacuating. I don't blame them. I wouldn't want to breathe that in either.

They are also very helpful when sanding woodwork or many other fixer upper projects. They are better than goggles for protecting your eyes and better than masks for protecting your lungs.

So gas prices will be jacked up because of it. I'm not sure what the national average is, but here we're paying almost $4 a gallon because of some pipe break. Really? I fail to understand why prices are so radically effected by such minor disruptions.
