Light Novels
Hello,

I have been a long time fan of anime and manga and I am thinking picking up few of these. One of my projects is also an attempt at one of my own.

I know about Haruhi Suzumiya, Accel World, and Sword Art Online any others worth recommending.

Brave Story, by Miyuki Miyabe, is one of my faves. It's usually kept in the fantasy section.

Edit: Although I guess there's some controversy as to whether or not it's a light novel. It was originally serialized, but some places list it as a light novel, and others as fantasy. Good book either way.

Like, kuwisdelu said, there is no legal translations to these novels.

You can always learn moonrunes and read it them like I did. Cost of shipping sucks though.

Nonetheless, they are all entertaining in their own ways.

Haruhi (bloated explanations), Monogatari series(explanations of explanations), Baccano, SAO (which I like), Accel world (which started to bore me), Toaru Majutsu no Index (which I just love the speculation), Zero no Tsukaima (I believe I dropped on the 4th novel when it was just boring).

If I may, I recommend some Visual Novels.
You can purchase the software and legally add the English translations on.
Muv-Luv series (all three and the LN)
Fate/Stay Night (first story is the anime, second is the move, third is yet to be animated(hopeful thoughts)
Forest (hard to find, eccentric to the point of insanity)
CrossChannel (One of the greatest stories I've ever read, VN or not. But, I recommend not to read it first. It will taint you and make you feel the others will never be as good)(The same writer just had his Light Novels animated called Jinrui Wa Suitai, which are also good.)

the only one I've ever read was a strange little light novel called "maid machinegun" which I picked up for a dollar fifty out of a discount bin in a local comic store.
'twas pretty weird honestly, but a decent if light hearted read. it was written from the perspective of a (fictional) web blog I think.

I've always wanted to read the kino no tabibito (kino's journey) series, since the anime really interested me. but I know very little of moon runes, and don't feel quite up to it.
it really is shame so few of them ever get brought over here.

I've been meaning to get a few of those for a while now. I just really hate having to search for and apply fan translations, since I'm a complete retard when it comes to computers.

so much to read, so little time.

I wonder...What would be the equivalent market in NA/Europe?

It seems like pulp is all but gone...and while there are short story markets here and there...nothing like what's in Japan right now.

Not much at all.

If one of our German peeps could go look - I don't speak German - there might be a couple of SF magazines still doing continuing short story series, but it has been a while since those have been brought up in conversation. I know 2000 A.D. used to have short (prose) stories every so often, but I can't say I've noticed those in a while - I haven't sat down and gone through them in ages though...
