Wot SP said.

I have a FB account and it's been greatly useful in me finding lots of long lost relatives and friends. I don't go there regularly, though.

It's Twitter I find utterly useless and a waste of time. I hardly ever use it, and the main reason is that it may come in useful one day for promotional stuf.
A couple of my Twitter mutual friends are best-selling UK authors who blurbed my first book; I've met them personally, the like is mutual, and they have large followings. I'm glad I met up with them on Twitter, and when I do go there I usually follow up on what they've been doing -- they are very prolific and tweet to each other and sometimes I comment back.

People tell me time and again that folks get to hear of your new releases through Twitter, but I'm not sure if that's the case. Maybe I'll say nothing about my next book and see what happens as regards sales.

Friending some cousins/aunts etc and giving others the ol' virtual slap in the face makes for tension that's just not worth having.

I reject family members all the time. My father in law has tried to add me about four times.

Hmmm. Telling a friend/relative that I've friended her and her children but not the husband she’s been married to for 30 years (because he’s a prick)* just isn't a conversation I'd want to have. It would hurt her more than him, hurt our relationship more than their relationship, and I don’t enjoy upsetting good people

*Not in so many words, but that would be the implication

I've never seen the appeal of facebook so it's much easier to avoid it altogether than pfaff around with awkward conversations about blocking people, multiple accounts and filtering who can see what. But then, I generally like to keep my life as uncomplicated as possible

I know this will shock you all, but if I think someone's a dick, I've never had a problem saying "You're a dick." And it's so much easier online!

But seriously, family doesn't mean jack shit to me; I much prefer my friends. They're the family you choose. If I offended a family member by not friending them, I guess I'd just have to learn to live with it.

Same here. There are a couple of in-laws that I accepted as friends because it would've been so mean not to. And then had to put them on "Ignore Posts" just to keep my sanity.

There's also this thing where I get a new post every time someone gets to a new level on a game they're playing. What the...? You can put those on ignore, too. Thank gawd.

Oddly enough, the family I reject never brings it up when I see them in person. Even my father in law has never asked why I won't add him, lol. He just keeps trying. But when people ask my why I won't add them, I point to the button that reads "friend." I don't add everyone I know or have met, I add people who I consider actual friends.

Facebook has really destroyed the meaning behind the word.

When my ex got remarried, his daughter (my former step-daughter, for 6 years) mysteriously disappeared from my FB friends. I'm 99% certain it was the new wife's requirement. I never said anything. It kinda sucked, though.

You can turn off that ability in the settings. There's an option to disallow others to tag you. Period. If you don't want to do that for whatever reason, there's an option to turn off any notifications regarding such tags and subsequent comments.

It's horrible! It's like none of the developers have a clue what usability is all about. My fave is having to go through three steps to permanently delete private messages one at a time.

One for family / friends / coworkers. That one is never updated and locked down tight to outsiders. If a potential employer looks for me, they will find nothing at all of use. I have some alerts on that one so I see when my peeps post pics of their little ones and such. I throw a like or two about once a week or RSVP to party invites when they pop up but that's about it.

The second is a gaming account I made so I could play goofy FB games without spamming the first account.

Neither is really 'me' sharing myself with the world so I guess that means my behavior is suspect, huh? Whatever.

Agreed. When I think of FB, I think of a maternal cousin posting in all caps and updating her profile pics of herself in her bikini. Not necessarily a bad thing, I mean she's 42 and has a banging bod but ... her kids are friended on her account. They've told me how mortified they are every time she posts. Poor kids.

By George, I think I've got it! FB is just another tool through which parents can embarrass their teenage kids! That makes me smile.

See, I love facebook and twitter. But then, I was a child of the internet and had my first email address at six. I'm super-disorganised, so honestly find them a convenient way to organise my self. It tells me when friends are having birthdays! I can't remember that, I can barely remember my own.

But the idea that someone who doesn;t use them is a dangerous criminal in the making? Um, no?

I despise Facebook.

People, mostly relatives, bugged me to get FB "so we can keep in touch." Hey, that sounded good. Some of my relatives are far away and it would be nice to stay in the loop. Because they don't reply to e-mails. Ever.

So I got FB, and restricted it to family and people I actually consider to be friends: about twenty in all.

I got tired of FB because people mostly posted crap I didn't care about: game requests, "Likes" on stupid crap (oh, you "Like" such-and-such store? I don't care). That sort of thing.

So I deactivated FB. Then EVERYONE got in touch with me to bug me about FB. Why aren't you on FB? Why do you hate FB? When are you getting back on FB?

So I reactivated the account. It's collecting virtual dust because I can't be bothered and still hate it. Now, people are bugging me with crap like, "Why don't you post on FB?"

You know what's going to make me a mass murderer? FUCKING FACEBOOK.

I didn't get on the internet until I hit double-digits, but I still more or less grew up with it.

I dislike social networks, because they bring real-life with all its issues and problems to the internet.

The internet is where I go to escape from all that.

I can just post them on facebook, and if people want to see them, they can look, and if they don't want to, they won't. Likewise, I will look at other people's photos if I think they are worth looking at.

I'm with Sarah1981 on this. I only opened a Facebook account because others pestered me about it, and I've hardly used it since. I tried to find some kind of a use for it, but it has never really worked out. It's just sitting there in a kind of cyber junk drawer along with the cyber garlic hullers and cyber mini melon ballers.

I guess what it boils down to is, the people I want to talk to, I talk to, and I just don't care when people's birthdays happen. I use the internet to broadcast public stuff about myself. Facebook isn't optimal for that. Therefore Facebook offers me nothing.

Doesn't sound like Facebook offers anything different to a blog-style personal website, then.

The Japanese internet has lots of issues, particularly with web design, but one of my favorite things about it is that their version of Facebook, called Mixi, is still totally anonymous. I can totally get behind an anonymous social network.

Honestly, the most fun I've had in an online community has been in my gaming community using my gaming handle. Twitter is great for that since they do not require you to use your 'real life' name. The gaming community I am involved with on Twitter can be lots of fun. Considering I game with people all over the world and don't necessarily know them in 'real life', I don't feel the need to know their real name or much of anything about them that they do not want to share. They just need to be fun and interesting and good at whatever game they are playing with me.

One of the reasons why I bailed on G+ and have a pseudo account for FB is because of this 'real' name requirement. I don't need to know someone in 'real life' to enjoy their company 'in game'. I've been using one of my gaming handles since I was 15 years old and 'know' some friends online better and longer than I 'know' some people I call friends in my 'real' life. So ... yeah I could see a definite use for a completely anonymous social network.

But then, the data crawlers wouldn't be able to connect our habits and preferences with those of our friends and family and create ever intrusive ads aimed at our 'real lives'.
