A hand-written letter of shunning was posted on HuffPo the other day. If you feel the need for cheering up after reading the letter, then by no means read the comments...

I'm actually a bit torn personally by my feelings that this sort of thing should be kept private, and whether or not it will offer illumination.

Frankly, I've about reached the saturation point for this sort of thing.

[The link doesn't work I'm afraid.] <<< Ignore that, it's fixed now.

Is that letter for real? Is it contemporary? Wow.

Yes.

Unfortunately it's not even that unusual. There's a reason that there are social service organizations for gay teens who are quite frequently kicked out of their parents' homes.

It's vile.

I have a sort-of brother who was kicked out of home when he was 16 because he came out to his father; he just moved in with us--we'd known him for years, and love him. But that was nearly forty years ago. I always hope that society has moved on from that and although I know it hasn't moved on as much as I'd like it to have, I still find myself gobsmacked when I read things like this.

It's so wrong, and all it does is cause upset. And for nothing. Why could the father not celebrate that he has a son who is fit and well and enjoying his life?

Sorry. I'm not at my most coherent because this is such a horrible story. My heart goes out to them both, and to everyone else who experiences of this kind.

I saw that on Facebook yesterday. It's so incredibly sad, and so incredibly disgusting, and so incredibly cruel.

Urgh. This is so wrong, and so sad, and just, gaahhh.

I feel like I must be some callous emotionless robot for noticing that the father writing this seems barely literate. But between the weird diction, the strange capitalization and other things, it really needs to be pointed out.

This is really awful. My heart, prayers and hope all go out to the James addressed in this letter and his dad.

My sort-of brother's parents haven't talked to him since he came out almost five years ago. It sucks so much that a family can and has actually reacted that way.
