Android based apps for writing/word processing

The word processing part is a basic RTF editor, with font choice, bold, italic, etc.

No footnotes, but other than that, it has all the basics.

Evernote is OK but its checklists don't work on my phone for some reason. I'll be interested to see if anyone suggests anything other than evernote. I'd quite like to be able to save in .doc and edit the same document on my nexus and on my PC in open office.

No arguments here. I have a desktop and laptop yet I'm at the point now where I'm doing most of my serious writing on my tablet. Absolutely love it, and my productivity has doubled.
I tried Kingsoft office- its free, and does everything you want, but was throwing up errors on my nexus 7. Perhaps you will have better luck. (May just be a compatibility issue with the latest android update, so I'm not writing it off just yet)
I currently use Officesuite pro 7. Even though it has a spreadsheet and powerpoint editor, you don't have to use them, and the word processor does everything I want it to. It can read and save doc and docx files. Not Odf unfortunately for us libreoffice people and there is a small bug that pops up every now and again when you highlight/delete a sentence, then press delete again, it sometimes eats into the next paragraph, but after the last update that happens very seldom- maybe twice a day. It has a spellcheck, but you have to pay extra for the ability to offer suggested changes.
It does have access to google drive though which is a bonus.

It's quite pricey, but what often happens is the developers put their apps on sale for a day or two, to get them to climb the charts, then drop them back to the normal price and ride the wave. If you bookmark your favourite apps and keep an eye on them, you can often find get some great deals. I got Officesuite pro a few weeks ago for $2.

Just waiting for Quickoffice pro, because that has a text-to-speech function.

Of course the best option if you're online is google docs. Fantastic, stable program that constantly saves your changes. I just use the other programs for those times I go offline.

Don't know what version of android you're running, but if you haven't got a slide keyboard, I would definitely recommend it. Makes typing so much easier.

My suggestion would also be to just use Google Docs. Though I hate using a tablet to write, with the possible exception of Microsoft's Surface Pro. Too tuned into Word to give it up

I use both google docs and Celtx depending on the project. I prefer docs as I can access it anywhere online, and download offline versions to revise. It also puts away the scary thought of a crash and forgetting to backup as it saves as you go.

If you're still looking for a tablet I can definitely recommend the google nexus, - the specs, screen and performance are outstanding, but you may want to wait a month for them to bring out the updated Hi Def 1920x1200 version- grrrrrr

You know, you might want to at least check out the iPad if photo editing is your main interest.

I've recently written a book for Peachpit on using iPhoto on iOS/iPhone/iPad. And there's Adobe's Photoshop Touch.

The pretty nifty, and the still free Snap Sneed is touted as a basic editor, but it's quite startlingly good, and easy to use.

The 30.00 accessory Camera Connection kit means you can easily connect a camera or a card from a camera and download photos to the iPad, if you don't want to rely on WiFi or the Cloud or traveling with a laptop.

Google's Picasa for Android may work for you as well; you'd need to see what features work off line via Google Drive and what doesn't, but it's decent, and excellent for some tasks.
