I also tried to "game the system" a little with a late submission. It had less to do with concern over less-than-useful comments and more to do with not getting the story stuck for 90 days. If they respond shortly after end of February I'll still feel good about it, having spent just over a month there.

Something I hadn't realised... Arc has opened up for general submissions, rather than just their contest. They pay £1500 ($2370) for short stories over 5000 words.

Nearly ALL of my stories are that length! Unfortunately, I don't think they're the right theme. That kind of pay is amazing. But also very intimidating to me.

Has anyone had any experience with Pinball? Particularly I'm wondering about response time. But any feedback on them would be great. I checked The Submission Grinder and it's there, it's just that there aren't any stats on it yet.

This week I came across a new token-rate (1/2 cent per word) market called Azure Keep Quarterly.

I sent a story there and have already received an acceptance, contract, and payment. They don't have any issues out yet, but I've been impressed with the responsiveness and professionalism of the editor/publisher there so far.

Dark Bits will be a collection of 52 horror flash fiction stories. We have no restrictions or subject or taste, only on the length. The anthology will be book and ebook formats. Reprints are welcome.
Maximum of 500 words. We will take multiple submissions; however the plan will be to only accept one story per author.
We are asking for non-exclusive print and digital rights
Payment is $20 per story.
Deadline for submission is 15 May, 2013

Eh, figures. That market has been on my suspect list for a long time now, what with the simplicity of the site, the fact the editor had no experience or apparent business plan and, of course, the fact that he never purchased ANY story submitted there. I'll bet he was just scamming for a free read.

For those of you new to pro-publication, Stupefying Stories is already collecting names for the 2014 Campbell Award Pre-Reading Anthology. I was recently in touch with the editor, M. David Blake, about eligibility and whether it was invitation only, and he said it was open to everyone who qualifies for the John W. Campbell Award (i.e. has sold a pro story within the 2013 calendar year). They are planning to post information on Stupefying Stories' website in the near future, so stay tuned for more information!

BTW, this is a non-paying anthology. It's just to showcase your writing chops and to allow others to read your qualifying works.

DarkFuse is now accepting original micro-fiction (flash fiction) for its website Horror d'oeuvres (http://www.horrordoeuvres.com) and its anthology series published under the same name.

(1) Manuscript must be between 99 and 999 words
(2) Story is dark fiction (dark element to the plot). Thriller, horror, suspense, crime, bizarre.
(3) Fiction is original, never before published in any form
(4) Manuscript is not submitted (or will be submitted) elsewhere during our review process
(5) No multiple submissions in each category (only one flash fiction story at a time)

Payment

All authors will receive 5 cents per word payable on initial publication, plus 1 free copy of all print editions their work appears in. In addition, authors will get a complimentary lifetime subscription to the Horror d'oeuvres site.

I would caution against submitting there. Their guidelines say this:

If accepted, DarkFuse acquires lifetime rights for web (each story will be archived for the life of the site) and first worldwide anthology rights for both print and eBook.

That means you can NEVER reprint the story anywhere on the Internet, which is very nearly an equivalent of giving up your copyright these days.

I wouldn't send them anything until or unless they amend this to a limited period of exclusivity. Lifetime web rights for anything decent are worth far more than $0.05/word.

Crowded Magazine opened two days ago with an option for traditional submissions.

I went that route and it seems most of their submitters did too. So far there are only two stories in the "crowd" whereas the same time last year they had at least a dozen.

Edit: Now the 9th, and only 23 stories in the "crowd." It'll be interesting to see what they do next open period.
