So I already joined this site once, was totally intimidated by the hugeness of it, and kind of forgot about it. I really want to try again though, so here I am!

I'd love to get to know some people here! I have no idea where to start, though. Any advice for a noob?

You might try posting in one of the silly threads in Office Party (they are almost all silly). You can get to know people on a purely fun basis that way.

Welcome. This place is huge, but if you hang around, you can get the hang of it. If you want to meet people, you can participate in some of the sillier threads, like those in Office Party. Or if you're dealing with any challenges, you can come by the Coffee Shop in the Conquering Challenges forum. We're a friendly, though often troubled, bunch there.

You can also do some critiques in Share Your Work or offer to be someone's beta reader.
