Multiple Offers on YA Title

Well, I pretty much thought we had this all rapped up and a solid sale to the highest (little) publisher, when in a bit of irony, another publisher (just contacted us this morning) is expected to come in with a counter-offer. This pub house is one that I respect and have always admired. They'll have to top the advance, well, I hope at least, and we now have until Thursday until the final decision is settled. Agent is using the phone on this one. Hope it works out in our favor.

I may be slightly misquoting but I think Stephen King said something along the lines of "Stop trying to be impressive, and just tell the God damn story."

And that's really it, isn't it? They don't want to get lost in the prose, they want to get lost in the story.

That's not to disparage beautiful writing, but the story must come first, because if the reader doesn't care then the beautiful writing won't get read.

I'm with you in that I had a YA story I didn't think would sell and I landed a deal right out the gate (Vigilante Nights). Forget the crystal ball...anything can happen in this business. I agree, with this kind of interest in your YA work, stick with it!

I don't know about me killing it, but both these YA titles have just performed so superbly that I couldn't be any more astonished. I've never had multiple offers on two books back-to-back like this. The thriller and the ghost fantasy books just sit, with no requests or offers. I was positively convinced that the thriller, a kind of female Iron Man, was the hot ticket, high-concept story and would lead the way. Not so.
I (and agent) have penned rejection notices to 11 publishers. About three of those houses seemed overly desperate, though. You can always tell when they're focused more on your marketing plan and your credit list. At least most of them contained advance offers from $100 on up.

Good luck on that. YA has been pretty damn cool for me lately. The other YA title is picking up interest. Fingers crossed for Catnip!

Update on Catnip. Was offered a contract and am thinking on it now. Perhaps the other publishers will chime in as well.

That was pretty quick for Catnip. CONGRATS! Just over a month? Good luck on that, but, more importantly, put that publisher through the ringer and keep your eyes peeled for other offers. Sometimes they flood in if you really have something.
